Age: 29

Interests: Chinese history, Buddhism, philosophy, golf, swimming

Other forums you visit: SMQ, E-sangha, SoSZ, AE, HG

Background info:

I was born in Taiwan, but family migrated to Singapore when I was 6. I was grown up and educated in Singapore. At the age of 19, I went to Germany for 6 months for a language study. After that I spent 4 years doing a direct master degree in mechanical engineering at Imperial College London. After graduation, I came back to Singapore and work for my family business, as a research engineer. Just last november, I was involved in sales and marketing and my title was changed to "account manager", in which I handle sales account.

My interests in chinese history dated back to my university period, when I started reading chinese history books, thereafter I've developed a strong interest in chinese history and culture. I'm a chinese history amateur basically.

I began to be involved in internet communities when I went to Heavengames history forum in 2000. After some fun over there, I founded Simaqian Studio in Jan 2001, which is an online community for world history discussion.

In June 2004, after realising that there is a need for a specialised forum for chinese history discussion, I founded this new community called "China History Forum".

Three years later, I moved on to the history of the Age of Fragmentation (after Three Kingdoms and until Sui), and kept reading into it while I was in the army for two-and-a-half years of compulsory military service. I soon decided to make it the focus of my future career as a historian.

At present, I'm in my last year at the National University of Singapore, majoring in History. I intend to pursue a PhD in the US, and then seek a position in the History department of a university (not necessarily in Singapore).

I'm also a committed Christian, and have been attending a Chinese-language church called the Evangelise China Fellowship since I was a child.

Sephodwyrm - June 12, 2004 04:28 AM (GMT)
Name
Po-Lung Chia (Jia Bo Long, Jia as in Jia Bao Yu, Bo as in Bo Shi or professor, Long as in the serpent)

Age
19 (birthdate on June 16, 1984..coming soon...and I'll be 20!)

Where I'm from
Taiwan, Taipei. To be more precise, I have lived in Zhang Hua and Ban Qiao, though my favorite place is Da Xi where my maternal granny lives. Da Xi is full of carpentry workshops making ancestral shrines for praying (Bai Bai) and has all these Huang Ri Xiang dried tofu (Dou Gan) at very low prices. I also like the fermented tofu (Do Fu Ru) there. Every morning there's this old lady who peddles rice dumplings (Rou Zong) and there's lots of breakfast stores around. Taiwanese breakfast is excellente...best, actually.

Where I'm now
California, Berkeley, attending college. I am doing plant genetics and biology and would probably not study anything related to history for my major. But its always been my interest to know more.

Interest
I really like to talk. I like to talk about experiences, life, computer gaming and especially girls. I love talking about girls I loved, or rather, have been infatuated with (there's 5 of them so far). They're all lovely ladies, but the last 4 has broken my heart...but they're still lovely. Yeah, I don't have to talk about my job here as a mod...that's an interest too.

Background info
Right, born in Taiwan, ROC, and underwent the basics kindergarten and grade 1 before moving to Indonesia at the age of 7. Lived at Bandung where the place is cool with an semi-active volcano (Tunkungan Perahu...I forgot the exact spelling). I attended Bandung International School there and learnt my English there. Yeah, had my first crush at grade 5 but left Indonesia to Singapore where I was thrusted back into the traditional East Asian education style in Christian schools where they force you to listen to sermons every week.

Anyway, I stayed in Singapore for 8 years. Went to AHS for secondary school where I had my second crush, and went to HCJC 2001-2002 where I had my 3rd crush. And then I'm here at Berkeley, and the first semester I had my 4th crush that nearly killed me, and a 5th crush that lasted for 3 months and now I'm onto my 6th...its improvement alright. In secondary school it was 1 crush for 4 years, JC was 1 for 2 years, and now in Berkeley it was 3 for 1 year. :D

If you need help in screwing up your relationship, I'm the one you would be looking for.

Han_Wudi - June 12, 2004 06:30 AM (GMT)
Plenty of countrymen, I see. ;)

Your nickname and real name (optional): Nickname is obvious... one of three I use on the Internet. Real name Tan Chun Wee.

Where you're from: Singapore

Age: 18 this year

Interests: History, the Internet, computer games

Other forums you visit: HG, AE, SMQ, SomethingAwful are the main ones, but I have loads of others

Background info: Born and bred in Singapore. I was a student in RI 1999-2002, and am currently a JC2 student in RJC. I plan to major in History *somewhere* after I finish my A-Levels and national service.

Sephodwyrm - June 13, 2004 05:51 PM (GMT)
Hows JC life, Han Wudi? Going good? My JC life was pretty bad. And I miss the beef noodles and the Cha Kwey Tiao...they don't have it here in the US. In fact, they don't have any good stuff in the US. To get good stuff I have to take a hour bus ride to go to Oakland Chinatown to buy the stuff I want.

Hey now, the U.S. has plenty of good food  . You'll just have to branch out from that home cookin' ;) .

Sephodwyrm - June 14, 2004 04:43 AM (GMT)
Au contraire, US food is just too impalatable for my delicate senses. The meat is too big, the eating is too messy, and I hate raw vegetables. If you're talking about US having Mexican, Korean or Chinese restaurants, I must say that those are not authentic US food. What I mean by US food is like steak or clam chowder or anything that's uniquely white American. And I generally find it impalatable. Not to mention that I personally find US food to be overrun by processed food items such as fries and burger patties, pizzas etc that's not really healthy.

And whats wrong with home cooking? Its cheaper, more healthy and much more enjoyable. I get to make up my own recipes and I get to cook my vegetables or pickle them as I see fit. I don't have to choose from an extremely limited menu, and plus, girls are very much impressed.

JC life sucks. It is meant to.

I can understand why you would miss those, they are truly SIngaporean delicacies. But don't you miss chicken rice too? ;)

By home cookin, I meant ethnical home cooking. Meaning the food from your homeland.

Yun - June 19, 2004 03:38 AM (GMT)
Sephodwyrm, here are some Asian restaurants I liked when I was in Berkeley:

Thai Noodle (I think it's on Oxford near the West Gate) - it's got fried rice, char siew rice, beef kway teow, and good pad thai

Steve's Korean BBQ - over on the south side, very famous. the beef dumpling soup and rice is good.

Le Petit Chevalier - Vietnamese cafe along Bancroft, large portions of various Asian dishes at a good price. But the "Singapore Fried Noodles" isn't Singaporean at all!

Where you're from: (Hong Kong or the USA)
Age: 30 plus

Interests: Football(Rea;l madrid fan, but nothing to do with Beckham)> I was a Real Madrid fan years before they sign the superstars.

Background info: I was born in US, but grew up in HK. I never took Chinese history in school. I learned my Chinese history from watching TV series. In college, I majored in International Relations(specialized in China between 1949 and 1980's). I planned to become a college professor on the subject, but dropped out after picking up a Master degree. from a good university in the US. However, my knowledge of Chinese history before 1949 is weak..... VERY WEAK.

BTW, I hate to discuss Chinese history during the Communist era even through I held a master degree on it. I got burned out.

General_Zhaoyun - July 2, 2004 01:08 PM (GMT)
Hi Tattoo.. welcome to CHF.. this is the place to learn chinese history. :P

Jiexiu - July 4, 2004 11:17 AM (GMT)
Hey there.

My name is Gabrielle. I'm 33, Australian born and bred but live in Taipei, Taiwan (have been here for the past 5 years), study Chinese, work in a law office and teach a little English...and like many members on this site I suspect, I am hooked on Chinese culture. My interests include martial arts (taijiquan, baguazhang, qigong...), travel, plants, dancing, reading, languages.

I've joined this site because my aim is to do a thesis on Chinese women martial artists from the past to the present day. I'm hoping that by reading discussions and posting material here which I find in the course of my research other members may have ideas on where to read/research in this area. There is so much material about women who were generals, rebellion leaders, warriors, healers via both medicine and qigong, founders of martial arts systems and styles....but collating it all, and tracking down leads in Chinese and English is a long process. So any names, ideas or directions would be most welcome!

Thanks for making this site available.

Nihao to all new members, welcome! B)

Hey Sephodwyrm, falling in love that much isn't a good thing - indeed, love and relationships are things that should be avoided at all costs

Your nickname and real name (optional): 阿彪

Where you're from: Born in Taipei Taiwan, move to the New York City at age 5.

Age: 30

Interests: Olympic Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Anime, Food, Cars, Girls, Chinese culture, Asian American Issues, and other guy stuff

Other forums you visit: Goldsea, Forumosa, Taiwanunity, Theasf.net

Background info: Educated mostly in the USA got BS/BA in Molecular Biology, Philosophy, and Theoretical Mathematics. Went to a few Chinese language programs in ROC and PRC during college because parents throught it would be bad to have a Chinese illiterate son. Spend most of my time reading Japanese comic translated into Chinese.

I think I read some Chinese history books when parents thought it was bad to have a Chinese literate son that didn't read some serious Chinese literature. So I started watching Chinese wu xia soap operas. Was thinking about doing a thesis on why Chinese subtitles don't match what people say in the show.

Currently semi-retired and wondering what to do with the rest of my life. Thinking about starting a second career as an internet entity.

I work hard at trying not to take things too seriously. So excuse my off the cuff remarks at time.

General_Zhaoyun - July 8, 2004 01:47 AM (GMT)
Hi AC_dropout..

Good to know you've learnt some chinese.. it's can be hard for chinese growing up in America to learn chinese. I have some kids of my relatives in America, but they can only speak chinese, but not read and write chinese.

It's always good to keep in touch with your roots and culture.

Heh heh..quite a number of Singaporeans here...

Well, I am born in Singapore. Left for NYC when I was 12. Studied, worked in NYC for most of the time. Went to college at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. 6 months after September 11th, I decided to immigrate to Canada. And proud to be a Canadian.

Not to mention...I am an old old 31 years of age.

My interests include finance, risk management, economics and history.

General_Zhaoyun - July 9, 2004 01:49 AM (GMT)
What is NYC?

LT805 - July 9, 2004 03:05 AM (GMT)
NYC = New York City = The Big Apple = The Empire State
(named after the Empire State Building).

Why is it call the Big Apple? Cause everyone wants a slice. NYC is a city of 7 ~ 8 million people. During the day, the population swells to 12 million because folks from the surrounding states flood in.

General_Zhaoyun - July 9, 2004 04:56 AM (GMT)
I see. ..thanks for the explanation :P

I've visited your forum as a guest before, when I saw the adress at Era of War I think, but I didn't think of joining... too busy with other forums right now I guess... anyways, some of the links are hard to see with the skin/background that you are using, but other than that it looks like a nice forum.
