Title: MetaStock - The Program

sacredmarket - September 28, 2006 12:35 PM (GMT)
Hi

Like to find out a few things about MetaStock

1.) How much and where to buy the program?

2.) Is there a subscription tied to it other than EOD data?

3.) Is there a trial for me to test?

Thank you

See: http://www.equis.com/Partners/partners.aspx?t=resellers&l=19

There are 2 versions: you should look for the End of Day (EOD) version if you don't have access to intraday data.

Not to I know of. But you have to have your data vendor so that you have the latest data. Look at our data vendor thread for more info.

I am afraid there is no trial version. The demo you find is just a flash, not the actual program.

Hi HC

Thank you for your reply. It is an expensive program! :) Is there a lot of difference between version 8 and 9? I would like to use it for intra day as well.

As far as I can remember, the main difference of ver 8 and ver 9 is in their pluggin. Pluggin, is a set of codes that appears in Explorer, Systems Tester, Customised Indicators etc, giving you additional ways/method on top of what Metastock already have. Ver 9 has more.

(Incidentally, Equis has released ver 10 now, after looking at the new features list, looks like they just added more pluggin).

To use it for intraday data, you have to go for the Professional version, which cost even more. Not only you have to have the professional version of software, but also the realtime/delay intra data feed, which is not cheap.

If you have access to Shareinvestor.com's forum, there is a place where you and download the intraday data at the end of the trading day, and don't have to pay additional fee other then their membership fee. This is a cheaper alternative, but you don't have access to the intraday data until the market is closed. I am not sure how useful you find this arrangement.

Just to add on, sharing some experience as a long time user of Metastock.

Metastock is VERY user friendly in plotting of charts. This is where its strength is. You can plot many type of chart, bar, line, candle, candlevolume, equivolume, kagi, PnF, renko & three line breaks. It has many built in indicators (with user changeable parameters) that you can just drag and drop into the chart. It has explorer which you can use to scan stock the meet certain technical condition. If the standard supplied indicators/explorers are not enough, Metastock has a coding language called "Metastock Formula Language" that you can code what you want.

However, I have some bad experience with Metastock on its System Testing function. This function looks more like a after thought, and has limited options that prevent me from doing realistic testing. I only use it to do a preliminary testing and highlighting the entry and exit on chart for me automatically.

Another is their techncial support of Equis. Few years back when I upgraded to ver 7, the ealier version cannot display stock of value less then 1 in PnF. The technical support keep pointing in the wrong direction instead of admitting their program has bug which I had pin pointed. Though I must say that they later fixed the problem and ship me a bug-fixed version, FOC.

The upgrade from ver 7 to ver 8, there is an revampt of System Tester, which now allow system testing to multiple stocks instead of the ver7's single stock. But the limited testing options still there.

I did not do the upgrade from ver 8 to 9, as I think it is just some inclusion of pluggin and not much improvement over the main program. I may be wrong.

Hi HC

Thank you for the insights. I got a clarification, the data feed. It is fed to us thru a data provider, are there any means we can get the data for free?

Any of the brokers provide this service? With lim and tan, i can actually download some EOD data but is on a counter by counter basis. Apprecaite if you can help me clear my doubts. Thank you in advance.

SM:

Yes, there are ways to download EOD data from Yahoo & SGX and convert into Metastock format so that Metastock can read directly. Just that I don't do that myself thus I dont' know how. If you are interest to go this route, then you have to hunt around yourself.

What I do know is the data from Yahoo is dirty: zero opening price, irregular date format etc. See my comment in the Data Vendor thread when I touched on ML Downloader.

As for your broker may provide individual's counter data, the downloading of all the counters is troublesome. Start to download/convert whenever you wish to look at a stock is non-productive, and you undermine Metastock explorer function to scan the whole exchange for counters that met certain techncial conditions.

Then there is also the issue of split adjustment.

I am currently using DataAnalyst Sever from http://www.technical-analysis.com.sg/prodSGX.html , and I am very happy with it. I paid an 1 time fee of S$84.50, with just a few clicks, I can have all the SGX EOD data in my harddisk in Metastock format within 5 minutes +- every night.

I think the 1 time S$84.50 paid is good value for money - the value of my time saved every night is worth much more than that.

I believe yours too.

Hi SM,

Like Hc mentioned previously, SI do provide EOD-Historical & EOD-Intraday data (see snapshot below - from Prices-SGX --> Price Download)

I'm not sure of your membership type (unless the SM in SI <> SM in CU  ), you might have access to these free data.

In fact, they're readily "prepared", so with afew clicks, you can easily convert the ASCII text file into metastock files.

But note that adjustment due to ex-div or stock-split etc is subjective, and sometimes their intraday data for several stocks are not clean (might be due to some error-trades, I guess).

I already support your blog - dun't u notice your blog is within my drop-down menu? :P

Livefeed is not cheap, I think Next View do provide this service. U may want to check their website..

Btw, since you can access Dynamic Charting of SI, certainly you can access those intraday data. So why not fully utilise this free service?

Instead of eod daily chart, you have a further option of getting eod hourly chart or even 30min chart, consider quite useful for those hot counters like China stocks, prop stocks, elect stocks and new IPOs etc.

Since you're looking for live feeds, I presume you're looking for occasional quick trades. These eod intraday data may help you to sharpen your trading before going for realtime data. Just my 2c opinion..

Hi Lion San

The live feed is for the tikum, need to trade to keep myself sharp :)

Nextview is a solid program, it cost S$100 per month for live SGX-ST charts. Too expensive for my blood unless i am able to earn much more than the subscription then no issue.

SI dynamic charts, which i am using now is ok. However, it does lack features found in nextview and metastock. The Dynamic Charts does not come with EOD download, i will need to add another S$80 for that. I am contemplating doing away with SIstation.

I also ask myself if i need all the bolts and whistles. ? Need to explore Metastock to have a better picture of what i need to do.

cheers

Like Lion mentioned, the intraday data I get is from Shareinvestor.com at THE END OF DAY. I don't have any source of SGX stock data live feed.
