Title: This. Is. F*cking. Cool.
Description: Earth. Google. Woah.

I'll. Stop. Typing. Like. This. Soon.
http://earth.google.com:) Spent the last 3 hours studying, looking for my place, Jennifer's (Tawonga), Albury, and her flat inn Melbourne. If y'all get away from American have a look at where on earth I'm blabbering about half the time :)

Unfortunately most of Australia isn't "high detailed" (my house was left off by a street!) but I think msot of America - at least the cities - are.
:)

Yeah, I've been playing with that for the past week or so, Geg. It's very cool!
Looked up my old high school back in Texas, and our house in the old neighborhood. Even found our house here in SF, no trouble at all.
And check out Henderson Field on Guandalcanal -- still there!
whizkid - July 12, 2005 06:00 PM (GMT)
That is one cool site,Geg. I went flying at about 10'000ft all over my old stamping grounds. Bought back some memories both pos and neg! Added to Favorites. I love the way you can tilt in all directions, too. Took a look at Buckingham Palace, but She wasn't in!
SF Phantom - July 12, 2005 06:04 PM (GMT)
Joker, could you see your car in the drive way? Wonder how Coit Tower looks......

Nope, Phantom -- I keep my 05 Mustang in the garage! :D
There were cars visible, though. I'm not sure how old the photos are. The construction site up the street from us is much advanced past Google's image, by several months from the look of things.
Could see Sutro Tower quite clearly, however. We're just west of that, less than a mile away. It's also a prominent landmark in MS FS2004, so I can fly over the casa -- even if it's just a blurry blob below, with the default terrain!
whizkid - July 12, 2005 06:13 PM (GMT)
BTW,if you want to see where I live,(and who doesn't,of course!) go to 38*43'15.50"N---121*17'56.82" W and eat your heart out! (right!) Terrorists needn't look.Don't know whos car is in my driveway. Have to have a little talk to the missus about that!
whizkid - July 12, 2005 06:14 PM (GMT)
Joker, you in Twin Peaks or the Avenues?
Paddles - July 12, 2005 06:22 PM (GMT)
That is very cool, Geg.
Check out New York City, the buildings are in 3D!

Shepherd - July 12, 2005 06:23 PM (GMT)
I use it for my FS2004 flights.

I was wondering how hard it would be to import it for fs2004...how did you do it?
Shepherd - July 12, 2005 07:07 PM (GMT)
I print it out on paper and go from there.
You fly FS2004?
Joker - July 12, 2005 07:32 PM (GMT)
Whizzer, I'm west of Twin Peaks, in Forest Hill Extension. We're just east of West Portal Ave., right up the hill, if you know where that is.
Shep, I use GoogleEarth to plan my FS2004 flights, too. I'm just getting into the sim, though. Downloaded a nifty freeware Stearman for practice. Lots to learn about navigation and ATC. Will need a more advanced trainer for that.
And I love the real-world weather! It's amazing to fly through dynamic weather, updated every 15 minutes from actual reports. Really brings the sim alive.
Have you tried Airliner Pilot? It's a pretty cool little payware app, lets you fly a commercial pilot's career with major airlines like United, or you can make up your own airline. You start off in the right seat as a junior officer flying Dash-800s. The app assigns you routes, and prints out a detailed flight plan. If you complete your routes properly, you gain points toward getting promoted. Eventually, you can work your way up to captaining a 747.
Of course, I'm nowhere near ready to fly a Dash-800, yet. But the app is neat.
Geg and Red, I also paid $10 for a payware Boomerang. Pretty fun to fly that bird over New Guinea -- but you can't shoot anything down! Think I'll stick with civil aircraft in FS2004. Everytime I pull the trigger in a FS2004 warbird, I feel despondent.
I mean, if they'd just add a combat option to FS2004, we'd have everything we ever needed. Can't understand how Tucker Hatfield and his team botched the CFS series so thoroughly, with a great sim like Microsoft Flight Simulator to use as a base. It's frustrating to consider ...
Shepherd - July 12, 2005 08:00 PM (GMT)
Joker I fly for a Virtual Airline and am cleaered to fly everything in our fleet accept helo's. I am currantly working on them though. I am a ATP Captain. I can fly any route and all.
Do you use VATSIM at all?
Shepherd - July 12, 2005 08:02 PM (GMT)
There is a new thing out too called FSPASSANGER. where you get rated by your pasangers by service, food, drinks, movie and quality of flight.
Joker - July 12, 2005 08:11 PM (GMT)
Nope, haven't tried VATSIM.
Heard about FSPassenger, though. I liked the part about "scaring passengers!" :D
Baltar - July 12, 2005 09:25 PM (GMT)
Whoa that is pretty cool. I heard about this in my dialup days but meant to look it up in the age of DSL. Now I see what all the hubub is about! Geg I hovered over there to check it out. I live in the little Looe harbor area on the coast 50°21'39.80"N 4°26'12.56"W. Detail is not that great unfortunately. Wow I have lots of exploring to do now...
Ok Whizkid, saw your area too.

Yeah I got a picture of me dressed up as an airline passenger for halloween in my kitchen someplace...
cobraj - July 13, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
found my house in hudson, ma , but noticed my red mini van in the driveway. So these pictures are at least about 4-5 years I guess, haven't had the van for at least that long.
Stans - July 13, 2005 01:54 AM (GMT)
I found the house where I spent the majority of my childhood! My current house is not on this global map. I currently live in one of the areas that is blurry and indistinct, much like most of M$ Flight Sim scenery.
whizkid - July 13, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
Stans, have you seen your eye doctor recently? You are getting older, you know!
SF Phantom - July 13, 2005 05:57 AM (GMT)
Hey, knock off the old jokes, we are not just getting older, we are getting slower too......................... :o
geg - July 13, 2005 06:08 AM (GMT)
My house, blurred though. But thats where it is: 35 08'55.01 S 147 22'14.62 E
Jennifer's tiny little town :) : 36 41'23.73 S 147 08'22.05 E
Paddles - July 13, 2005 06:42 AM (GMT)
For those of you suffering from blurry images at the house level of detail, try
http://maps.google.com.
My house isn't in the Google Earth, but it is at Google Maps and you can zoom in pretty much the same way as in the Earth program.
Also, you gotta try the "Get Directions" thing on Google Maps. Takes a bit to figure out the address formatting, but once you do, it's pretty amazing how it draws the route from your front door to wherever you want to go.
UPDATE! I just discovered that I could change Google Earth to render in Direct X mode rather than OpenGL mode...now I can see my house in the zoom-in!
Stans - July 13, 2005 09:49 AM (GMT)

Oh, I was thinking more along the lines of importing the mesh and textures. I usually only do VFR in FS2004 with the smaller general aviation planes.
Shepherd - July 13, 2005 02:28 PM (GMT)
I only fly VFR in the Eurocopter.
Most of the time I am flying a IFR on line. Unless I am testing something. I took Citation X from the runway to 45k stright away on VFR, although the tower was none to pleased. Maybe it was the barrle rolls I was doing. I destroyed the airframe, wax on 25 million buisness jet.
whizkid - July 13, 2005 05:29 PM (GMT)
Geg,you live in Willans Hill, right? Looks to me like your grass needs mowing, lad! I think Jennifer has the best view, with those beautiful mountains behind her. Pretty remote though.
whizkid - July 13, 2005 06:18 PM (GMT)
Baltar,I just took a look at your home area. You lucky devil,do you have a view of the Bay,and the Channel? What a neat place to be. My parents lived in Brixham before they died, and I love the West Country.
Baltar - July 13, 2005 07:03 PM (GMT)
I can see the English Channel from my back porch! Takes about 5 minutes to walk from the house to the salty brine.
On my way to Brixham... :D
Donster - July 13, 2005 07:29 PM (GMT)
Just gave this Googlethingmie a go. It is really a neat tool to use. But yes the images are older. I put my mom's address in, and it showed her house, with both crab trees in the front yard, which have been gone for about 2 years now.
whizkid - July 13, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
Hey,Donnie, give us yer co-ordinates. I want to drop a ...er....gift in yer backyard!
Baltar - July 13, 2005 08:39 PM (GMT)
Here is a cool site about the program...be sure to check the links. Very neat stuff.

The world weather view is really cool. Atlanta and Seattle have traffic overlays too. It will be great as it matures.
Go find the desert aircraft graveyards!

E-mailed it to ya Whizzer. ;)

Uhhh....Donnie? I don't think he was planning on dropping a babe in your back yard. I think it might be a gift that the dog made.

Thats ok, maybe it will chase off the deer that have been eating all my flowers and bird seed! <_<
whizkid - July 13, 2005 10:42 PM (GMT)
Aww,Stans, you big mouth, you! Nothing wrong with a little fertilizer between friends!
Stans - July 13, 2005 10:51 PM (GMT)
    I have this vision of the opening scenes in the movie Smokey and the Bandit II where the Burdett brothers "bomb" a political rally.
