Title: v.4.01m

Is it pooched?

I did a complete re-install of the PF-FB-AEP merge as per my squadrons SOP. I carefully checked and verified each patch along the way, as I usually do.

Can't use the FMB.

When I try to zoom in or move objects or just about any work on even a lightly built up project on the N. Guinea or Pelilieu map it freezes, forcing a ctrl-alt-del. :(

I later installed that rts file to no effect.

Lee? Rick? Knuckles? Anyone?

Ya know this'll drive me to the brink of insanity eh. <_<

All I can say is that I haven't seen this, Marc. :(

Now, I didn't do a reinstall. I had backed up PF before applying the 4.0 patch, so I applied 4.01 over my backed-up install, which was patched to 3.04. That install has had all the patches applied since the first release of FB.

Same here, I just keep copies of the whole game folder in reserve, just in case. Did you do a full uninstall and delete the folder after going through the Windows uninstall thingie? It's also best to do a defrag after the uninstall and deletion. Reinstall IL2, then AEP, then PF, then patch 3.03m, 3.04m, and finally 4.01m.

Complete and total cleanup stans.

Followed the install & patch guide, and squad SOP, to the letter plus starting the game after each to verify.

Just went thru it all again with the same result (does that mean I'm insane?).

Before I started this adventure I had noticed the game "sticking". That's with the old install with 4.01 over 4.00. So I thought a fresh install would be a good thing anyway.

Having a backup install is a good idea, at least up to 3.04. However, not sure if it would matter much in getting me to 4.01.

What's happening is the the CPU useage skyrockets to 100%. May mean a reformat. :(

As Imperator Schatten would say, I am vexed, very vexed.

Thanx guys. I'll get this sorted one way or another.

Yeah, you might have a hardware problem. Some of my problems boiled down to a video card heating issue. Once I got the temps down, stability was achieved, but until then it would lock up, go to black, then to the desktop while loading, while flying, while setting the options, just about anytime. Since yours was stable, then began to get wonky before uninstalling, I might suspect hard drive, but I think a RAM or video card issue might be possible. How old is your computer?

Chopper - July 10, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
3 y/o now. The GF-4 is about a year old. My sys is a P4 2.4 GH with 1 Gb RAM.

Hope not a HD failure. Already had one of those.

Rome:Total War and SH3 run with no prob, but then again, they aren't as resource intense.

Stans - July 10, 2005 04:53 PM (GMT)
Is your computer clean? Dust getting in cooling fans and heat sinks will cause a system to run hot and when really pushed, will over heat and malfunction. 2.4 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM should be sufficient for Pacific Fighters.

Joker - July 10, 2005 05:55 PM (GMT)
Marc, IIRC, CPU usage should be nearly 100% when you're running PF.

It's a real resouce hog.

How does the rest of the sim run, aside from the FMB?

Chopper - July 10, 2005 06:12 PM (GMT)
Seems fine Lee. Which is why I haven't even thought of drivers. Don't fix it if it ain't broke eh. However, haven't checked, but I think I'm still using 48.xx or 52.xx for my nVidia GF4 Ti-4600 with 128Mb. The latest is what, 77.xx or something, so now I'm wondering.

Stans - July 10, 2005 06:23 PM (GMT)
Hmmmm..... drivers were an issue for me too, at least to a degree. I'm using the 71.89 driver for my 6800 Ultra PCIe card, works great. The 66.93 worked ok.

Joker - July 10, 2005 07:14 PM (GMT)
I'm using 77.50s for my 6600 GT.

Oleg-recommended drivers are still 66.93, I think.

Updating couldn't hurt, Marc.

You could reinstall and patch back to 3.04, and see if the FMB runs properly under that patch. If it does, then drivers might well be the issue.

I was just about to do just that.

cobraj - July 11, 2005 11:33 AM (GMT)
anyone able to fly the "Betty"? I come up with an error when I try to select it...

Baltar - July 11, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
CobraJ it works for me but I suppose you could still call it an error, except for the 20mm tailgun.

Got pulled away from this project. Back at it soon.

However, I'm now beginning to suspect it may not be the game, but my pc, maybe even my mouse as odd things have been happening.

This is sorta obvious, but have you cleaned the mouse lately, Marc?

Chopper - July 12, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
Monthly.

Another strange thing when I enter CSim. When I click on Ready Room for instance, it starts to access then quits with "Done". It takes several tries for it to kick in.

Hmm, you've checked that the mouse is properly plugged in, of course.

Do you have another mouse that you could swap out, as a test?

If that doesn't help, could it be the mobo, maybe? The mouse recepticle or something similar might be flaking on you, I mean.

Or, could you have changed the settings for your mouse, inadvertantly ... ?

Could possibly be Windows too. The dreaded re-install. Also do a full scan for viruses and spyware, you never know and these little buggers have done weird things to my computers in the past.

So I'm thinking.
