While King Tristan wages war thousands of miles away in Orchyre, the taxes for war are starting to take their toll. The poor are getting desperate while the power hungry nobles seem determined to leech every last penny they can from the people they are meant to care for. Ridiculously harsh punishments are dished out to those unable to pay their taxes on time and children can be sentenced to execution for simply stealing a loaf of bread.
The city of Swyncliff is particularly suffering. With ruthless Lord Adrian Winchester holding an iron grip over the city and the nobles who govern the surrounding villages, it's a wonder the people have survived for this long. Since returning from Orchyre after a near fatal infection in a battle wound, young nobleman Raven Thorne - outraged at the suffering that has developed in the place he once called home - turned to life as an outlaw to protect the poor from Adrian's tyranny, taking up the alias of The Green Man after he and his gang took up residence in Rosedale Forest.
