The wound on Macabre’s neck would heal faster were it not for its inaccessible location. Damn Simon! His bite had torn the skin a few inches below her ear and now, without proper grooming, it festered and ran with yellow pus. Her thick winter coat hid it from both sight and scent, but the bite still grew sore. Well, if she couldn’t wash it then she’d find another way to cleanse it.
<p>
Not far from the same slope where she attacked her son, Macabre had followed his trail to a lake. Now, her great black paws fell in the same rhythmical stride toward the lake... Skycloud Lake. Mottled shadows interspersed with sunlight creating jaguar-like rosettes along her shifting figure. Golden eyes glowed in the shade of the pines.
<p>
She owned that crystalline water now, as well as the other Mordechai members. If Simon wanted to stay alive, he better not wander into her territory. But Macabre knew her son wasn’t on the East side anymore. She’d found his tracks – along with Chaim’s – heading for the river. They ended there.
<p>
Simon and Chaim were with Kiskana now.
<p>
<i>Traitors.</i>
<p>
Arriving at the border of Skycloud Lake, the female paused and shook her head and mane violently as if to throw off the bad memories. Shoulders rippled without heed to the slight pinch of pain as the wound broke open again. Watery pus leaked out and dampened her shoulder. Her wet, leathery nose wrinkled at the smell. Macabre turned, approached the lake's shore, and waded into its cool waters up to her shoulder.
<i>Ahh…</i>
<p>
Ebon fur floated underwater and gave access to her oozing injury. Macabre felt the cold water move along the chasms of her torn flesh and muscle, dispelling bacteria and dead cells. Moving farther down the bank, she parted heavy jaws to lap the crisp water before tossing her dripping head and bounding back up onto the bank.
<p>
The infected heat of her wound now felt cool and clean. No more noticeable pain. Good. Shaking off as before, Macabre strolled along with her damp fur spiked for the moment. Sopping tail lashed vigorously behind her, separating strands so they would dry more quickly. The warm sunlight shone on her glistening pelt. They caught the rivulets of water that ran along her fur like liquid diamonds.

Rafe - March 20, 2008 06:20 AM (GMT)

    [*sqooshes* Lateness. I know I say this often...but...forgive me? ;3]
    <p align=justify>
    The lake was an eerire area, the moist odours amassing with the foreign smells of a former domain. In some ways, it was considered paradise, its waters tamed for only those deemed pure and worthy. Yet...there was a tarnished stain padding over the shores. The banks rushed in at a hurry, dragging down the craggy edges of the borders until it smoothed into one continuous line. A face of numb was reared out to the shoreline as Rafe’s thoughts broiled slowly in his head. Fairy-tale children and storybook lives were nothing but daydreams he once nurtured in reality, which in his opinion, was polluted with sin and injustice. Creatures as himself chose to relinquish to this theory and live in a world guided by painful realism while others decided to flitter off and live in false haven. It was there that the ignorant roamed free; no villain to come and destroy their self-inflated joyful image. A sigh fell from charred lips, ignorance was never bliss.
    <p align=justify>
    Collecting himself, he forced his limbs to push forward. Cool, brown soil acted as an ointment to sooth his tensed feet. Again, the water rushed upwards, separating between the cracks of mud and continuing to climb for a few inches before falling back into the massive body of water. Bark floated in the sea, dull strips of brown that seemed to ruin its clouded image, making the water around it seem placid, almost still. An illusion of purity seemed to install awe in many wolves, but he knew better than to marvel at simple oddities. Even so, he couldn't complain about the effect, the calming and subdued rocking of wall to shore. A potent breeze brought news of another figure not too far off from the male, causing Rafe to pause in his way and concentrate its odour. The coming scents took a few moments to determine, but the male concluded that the wolf was Mordechai and was not subordinate or omega.
    <p align=justify>
    Intrigue drove the male towards the epicentre of the scent and his restless eyes were content to have something to do other than pointlessly hang in their sockets. And who might that be? he asked himself the indistinct figure came into view. Nearing the creature, the all too familiar scent registered as something that caused a great feeling of relief to stir within him. Macabre stimulated many questions that he had vowed to ask and in truth, he hadn’t. The power she possessed over him was foreign, different to his former alphas yet strangely congenial. 'Macabre..?' The tone, questioning, felt so foreign and unusual in Rafe’s murmer. He stopped, impassive eyes lingering upon her wet fur. 'I’m sorry…have I disturbed you?' he paused. Oh the things he could ask! They came flooding through his mind as the sights and scents of various importance were registered. Soon he took a single step forward, which fell into a movement of lowered head, ears and tail. Within a few moments, he was in a position of calm; or levity, he could never tell the difference.
    <p align=justify>
    Flattening his ears, Rafe looked around, dejected.

<i>"I’m sorry... have I disturbed you?"</i>
<p>
Half-lidded gaze darted sideways toward Rafe’s voice in a fluid sweep. He hadn't startled or frightened Macabre; Mordechai was her home. Had Rafe been an outsider, she would be the one instilling fear and not vice versa. Golden orbs glimmered with pleasant satisfaction at the sight of the fellow Mordechai wolf. She didn't know Rafe much and wanted to familiarize herself with him.
<p>
While some females felt particularly self-conscious while wet, Macabre took no shame on it. Even while standing with her black fur pressed slick against their feminine figure, she delighted in her freshly-soaked appearance. Not vain, just appreciative of natural beauty. The water glistened on her fur which brought a heightened sensitivity to the breeze against her skin. Even now, the sun stroked her angled cheekbones and muzzle with its warmth. It felt particularly wonderful.
<p>
Macabre lifted her head and smiled slowly, still a bit entranced by this blissful moment… but Rafe didn't seem to feel comfortable with the circumstances. He lowered his head and tail respectfully but she noted a deeper sinking to his motions. His eyes drifted away from her and she couldn't tell whether he was ashamed or daunted. Hopefully neither. Although she was a huntress, Macabre was no divine Artemis who would tear him limb from limb for this private sight. In fact, she usually fantasized about seducing innocent males like him. Forbidden sensuality delighted her.
<p>
But Rafe had Toska and pups, so he was off the list. <i>Unlike Dakota and Haskyl, of course.</i> She recalled the two delicious males, strong and in their prime, both without dependents or romantic duties. She'd have to get wet for them too, and Dakota would definitely love the way her saturated pelage clung to her curvature. These devious thoughts brought an amused smirk curling along to her maw. Macabre turned toward Rafe and grinned boldly.
<p>
<b>"It takes much more to disturb me. You look a little down… is something bothering you?"</b>
<p>
She found it always a benefit to launch directly into business without small talk. At least it would redirect his mind to issues more purposeful that simply being self-conscious.

    occ- sorry..once again x[ --- AND in the wrong account *is a hopeless case*
    <p align=justify>

    "Must they always come so close?" Was it always like this for innocent victims? Was it a right to feel cautious, your legs frozen and time seeming to slow down? Every slight movement that followed his encounter seemed horribly unmoral, luring the pure-hearted male to inch but a step forward. There was a taste for...something, for every last throw of restrain he could harness. Even so, such 'forbidden' behaviour, oh the scandal of it all, refused to perturb the female, at least, to a level that persuaded him to slump into the pre-deformed swagger he had branded his own. Such - tragedy. Everything was a drunken slur save for the defiled Alphess making no, obvious, effort to conceal her outline - and he stood there, solid and unrepentant. If circumstances were. . . different . . . the female could have caught herself an easy meal.
    <p align=justify>
    Her words were brief, parallel to the breaking water, coursing over the sagging edges of each bank but like the half sincerity he appeared to be. 'Glad to hear it' Burnt fur padded gently in the passing breeze that ran along her body. The ghost of creme licked against his legs, hanging like ragged scraps from beneathe his undersides. With the moaning lake pushing gallantly over all too familiar scenes, the picture of nervous tension was painted in generous strokes across his face. Perhaps this is the part where he spoke and stopped staring... where was common sense when you needed it? A small army of sensible thoughts would've been quite useful, throwing outlandish behaviour to hell as it made its descent. Now really, this wasn't helping was it? 'Oh nothing from the usual 'despised by all' frame of mind' Sarcasm, how joyous. 'I trust you are...well?'

Rafe remained standing with an odd look, cocking his head in a different direction part of the time and yet unable to draw his gaze from Macabre. She smiled to herself at the thought of being able to catch a male's eye and lead it like a leash. The cool breeze felt as good as it could in autumn, although a few fingers ran beneath her black fur and made the skin beneath prickle with goosebumps. In a few weeks, it would be winter.
<p>
Mordechai was prepared for winter. There were definitely enough members to tackle a big animal like that old moose. Dakota helped bring that down before Mordechai formed and now they had powerful adults as well as the prodigy Charlie to help with hunting. Amitria and Catori would both be trained and already seemed eager to try their hand at hunting. Most packs traveled together during the bitter, cold months of winter. Mordechai was no exception... although what would happen when all those tensions were forced together?
<p>
<i>Hmm... that should prove interesting.</i>
<p>
Lifting her golden eyes from the thought and settling them back on Rafe, Macabre dwelled on his comment. Nothing from the usual "despised by all" frame of mind, eh? Well, Dakota disliked him and Catori disrespected him... true. But what about Toska, Haskyl, Jenacia? She nodded at his inquiry about her health and well-being, then shook her damp coat vigorously and let it puff out a little.
<p>
<b>"I can see the hostilities between you and Dakota, and Catori's indifference. But what about the others?"</b>
<p>
This would give Rafe an opportunity to fill her in on his experience in Mordechai thusfar.
