Howdy,
I would like to start a discussion about the effects of brain/body development on growing children. With topics of complex sleep apnea. If anyone knows anything about or has known anyone who has experienced this here is your chance. I'm new and have skimmed the postings and it had been mentioned a few times, but not in any detail. I apologize if I missed any and if you could direct me to an old posting it would be appreciated.
I was diagnosed when I was 17 with Severe OSA after I crashed my senior year. I was not overweight but also not fit. I figure it has to do with the structure of my head. I was born with a hidden cleft palate and had oral re constructive surgery and ear tubes as a child. I don't remember much of my childhood or adolescence but my parents say I was very energetic until about 4th grade. Then I became dead to the world. It was as if my life energy store had been depleted.
I finished High School and just finished college for music. During college I grew emotionally, physically, and most importantly socially. I lost 30 pounds and became more fit. I excelled in music until senior year where I started to decline in energy and sharpness. I failed three huge trials: my senior recital, a multi day trek leading program, and my student teaching during my fifth year. I was re diagnosed with a lower pressure due to my weight loss, but I still don't have any energy. I've changed my diet, life style, and I don't take any medication, but to no avail. So I'm revisiting my sleep apnea which is now moderate.
While skimming postings I read about complex sleep apnea under the title, "A new type of sleep apnea: Complex
--
synopsis:
Complex apnea- starts as obstructive sleep apnea then develops into central sleep apnea
obstructive- is the relaxation of the throat muscles
central- the brain does not send proper signals for breathing.
--
upon reading I asked:
Can obstructive from birth develop into central?
Especially when treated later in life?
I thought maybe my lack of sleep had a developmental effect on how my brain thinks about sleep. Re-programed through years of not knowing anything different.
I've noticed during the day since last year or so I stop breathing. There was a thread sort of about this under "very strange breathing problem". I don't notice until I gasp for air in semi-alarm. It drives my girl nuts. the only thing I can compare it to is watching myself apnea from a recording. It seems as though i'm experiencing apneas during the daytime while I'm awake. that's what struck me about CSA being brain related.
Does anyone have CSA?
I also read about the APAP, which sounds great. (probably costs a fortune!)
This is a great forum and am excited about reading more.
Thanks
Not sure what you're looking for, but here is some info I found about Complex Sleep Apnea, including some multimedia presentations that may be helpful. I think this is a Resmed site, so they are trying to offer their new VPAP machines, as a solution to Complex SA, so keep that in mind:
