GERD: Acid Reflux and the Sleep Disorder Connection
Peter Phelps
Gastro esophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD, is a condition brought about by acid backing up into the esophagus causing heartburn. Recent studies also show that a great many people who suffer from GERD may also suffer from sleep apnea.
Dr. Kurt Barrett, a family practice physician with special interest in gastroesophageal reflux disease, will speak on the topic 'GERD - Acid Reflux and the Sleep Disorder Connection' on Wednesday, December 19 at Burnham Brook Senior Center. Senior Health Partners presents the program as part of its 'Aging Well' series, which is free to the public. A light luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. followed by Dr. Barrett's presentation at noon. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling Senior Health Partners at (269) 441-0948.
"The question still asked, though, is 'Which came first acid reflux disease or sleep apnea?' Since both conditions can involve inflammation of the throat area, it is difficult to determine if one precedes the other, " says Dr. Barrett. "Some suggest that the backup of stomach acid in GERD may produce spasms in the vocal cords (larynx), thereby blocking the flow of air to the lungs and causing apnea. Or, apnea itself may cause pressure changes that trigger GERD. There is some evidence that suggests treating sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may reduce GERD symptoms by nearly 50%."
It is estimated that the more than 20% of Americans with weekly heartburn symptoms have GERD. When these people go to sleep, problems seem to intensify. If you suffer from GERD and have noticed a problem with your sleep patterns, there are things your physician can review to assist you in preventing this disorder.
Dr. Barrett will cover the various aspects of GERD related to sleep disorders and review the treatment options when a person is presented with these conditions.
