Title: Mask question

glen4cindy - September 21, 2007 05:14 AM (GMT)
Is there any real difference between a full face mask and a nasal mask as far as the befefit they provide?

I tend to be a mouth breather sometimes while I am alseep so I recently switched to a full face mask. However, I often don't feel as well as I do when I have a good night with the nasal mask. By "good" I mean one where I don't spend alot of the night breathing thru my mouth.

I can really "feel" the nasal mask opening up my airway and do not feel this same effect with the full face mask.

Would the pressure requirements be the same with either mask? I know I cannot adjust my own pressure, but, do I need to have another titration study using the full face mask?

Thanks!

I do not think it makes any difference for nasal or mouth breathers as to the efficiency of the various masks. If mouth masks didn't work, they would not use them. If your machine has data that can be dumped, check the results of your AHI events to see if you are getting effective treatment. The nasal mask might feel better, but being a mouth breather, you may open it during the night and not be getting good therapy. Check the data and come back here.

Shouldn't they have tried you out with a chin strap? During my first sleep test, they found that
when i mouth breathed, my sleep was a disaster. So, a chin strap, and the readout showed
a practically normal sleep.

I don't know how to download the data off my machine.

It has what looks like a headphone jack on one side that is supposed to be for downloading, but, I don't even know which cable would be needed.

As far as a chin strap, I tried that, but, had no luck with it.

Many machines have data that can be downloaded into computers. Contact your DME, that person should be able to access your data and see if your AI/AHI are down to the acceptable level. Some machines have the capability to show leakage, AI, AHI on their menu screens. Any check with your DME to get more info. You have a right to know if your therapy is working.
