Title: New Member with question.

Angus - September 14, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
Hi all,
Just joined a few day's ago & have been getting a lot of my questions answered by reading previous post's. I have not been diagnosed with sleep apnea yet but the more I read, the more I think I need to get checked.

The reason I joined is to get information for my 37 year old daughter who just started on Cpap therapy 3 day's ago. This all happend after 9 trips to the emergency room in the past 3 month's. They continued to treat her for ashma until her mom & I started forcing the issue. Several specialists later they found that not only did she have sleep apnea, but vocal cord dysfunction as well.

She seem's to be adapting to the new equipment without too many problems. She say's she is having a real tough time breathing in the morning when the mask comes off. This normally lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes. My Question: Is this a normal problem with new users or is it something we should let her Dr's. know about?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,

Brian Adams

You can always ask a respiratory therapist. However, for me it does take a brief adjustment period (esp. sicne it is new) - since you are going from receiving a continuous amount of pressure of air, that when the mask comes off, it makes sense that there is an adjustment period for your body to acclimate to being without that pressure again.

By no means am I a doctor, but I know myself I have "lazy lungs" and they want to go back to that being lazy naturally, so coming off from the machine there is a transition period. Am hoping that my lungs learn to not be so lazy as time goes on.
