I am new to the board and this is my first post. I have just been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. Just went for my last study on the machine. How long after you do that do you recieve your CPAP machine? They did give me a mask already but not going to do much good without the machine itself. Also have any of you found it easier to lose weight after being put on CPAP machine? I know my doctor said that sleep apnea can cause you to put the weight on. Due to the fact that your tired all the time.

Well, unless you're part of some plan that supplies you with the machine, chances are you're going to have to buy it yourself and apply to be reimbursed by your insurance plan - if you have one that covers this condition.

Insofar as the weight gain/loss is concerned, I haven't noticed any change in that regard. Mind you, I'm getting on in years and the newfound pleasure of being able to sleep properly has actually decreased my activity, as I prefer to spend my leisure hours taking naps and enjoying dreamland - for a change.

I've actually gained weight - 38 lbs in 6 mos. The pulmonologist didn't disguise his disgust with the fact that my being overweight significantly contributed to my sleep apnea (even though mine is mostly central apnea) and assured me that using CPAP would result in weight loss. Nope. As much as I hate the hassle of the machine, I do fall sleep much more quickly and finally tend to stay asleep for 5 or 6 hours - an absolute miracle compared to 6 mos ago. But I was stunned at the weight gain. Mother Nature having a bit of fun, I guess.

Thanks for the input. I finally got my machine and I have not slept better in years. I can't ever remember sleeping that well and the dark circles under my eyes are starting to disappear. I have been on my machine for about 3 weeks now and I have not feel asleep during the day at all. Finally I can once again enjoy a good book without falling asleep after the 3rd or 4th page.
