Title: Loads of questions

Dee - November 30, 2006 06:57 PM (GMT)
Hi all, I finaly managed to get logged in !!! :D
I'm newly diagnosed with sleep apnea and have loooaaads of questions which I hope may be answered here.
1) Do I need to notify DVLA of my diagnosis? My consultant didn't advise me to.
2) Why arent CPAPs available on the NHS? I work for the NHS but my machine is going to cost me £39 pcm.
3) Can I get Living Disability Allowance to cover the cost? Ive put in a claim as advised by the DHS but its going to take approx 8 weeks before I hear anything.
4) Isn't there something a little more appealing than the headgear Ive been given? ComfortLite by Respironics.......VERY sexy!!!!! NOT!!! :(
5) How do you know how bad you've got it? My Dr said I woke up 118 times in 6 hours sleep following a night with a box with wires attached.
I'll leave this for now and await replies before starting on the next lot of questions.
Thanks for your help
Dee

Welcome to Apnea Board, Dee.

We don't have much experience with the NHS, DVLA, or DHS over here in the Colonies.

As regards the Comfort Lite, it's a fairly popular product, although of course there are alternatives available. Why don't you share with us your specific complaints? Perhaps we can make some suggestions for you.

I would consider an apnea index of <20 (per hour) to be mild. My own apnea, if untreated, tends to average 80 to 100 episodes per hour.

Carl
