Title: Is it safe to self diagnose??
Description: Med docs response to my question

Hi,
I've been on a CPap machine for about 2 years now. I use a pressure level of 14 on my machine. It has made a world of difference in my life. I have lost about 60 lbs and several health issues have cleared up ( I now have excellent blood pressure and my rhr is about 50).
I have moved since getting diagnosed with sleep apnea and have not gone back to my original cardiologist because of this. I have setup with a regular medical doctor.
I was talking with her the other day about whether or not I might need to re-see another sleep doctor (or cardiologist) since it's been a couple of years and things have changed a lot with me.
Her comment was that I did not need to see a specialist for this and I could always do the poor mans test to see if I still needed the cpap machine...i.e. sleep without the machine and see how I feel.
Now I know at the time I was diagnosed, the cardiologist told me I had extremely severe sleep apnea and to not even take a nap without the machine. That I quit breathing an average of 4 times a minute.

I was just wondering what other's have experienced after getting their cpap machine and how they feel about the above.

thanks

letmelaughatyou,

At a pressure that high, I would tend to agree with your cardiologist. Since it has been two years, I would also urge you to go ahead with another sleep study to see if you need your pressure changed, which is common when someone loses weight.
