Title: hypnagogic startle

stevei - September 22, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
Hi,
New bloke on the block here.
Im 43 years old and have been suffering from what i believe is called 'hypnagogia'. As I fall asleep at night, I suddenly spasm, gasp for breath and have a sensation of panic. This can happen many times in the night untill I eventually fall asleep. I have suffered from this for many years, but now with increasing severity. The only trick seems to be a bottle of wine before bed. If anyone can tell me more about this condition, and where to get help, I would be so grateful. It really is getting quite distressing. Thanks

Welcome to Apnea Board, Stevei.

Here's a link to an article on Hypagogic Startle.

Personally, I don't think that your symptoms are diagnostic of this condition. If you haven't consulted a board-certified sleep specialist, I would do so as soon as possible. A polysomnogram, or sleep study, should help your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis of your condition.

Good luck! Carl
