Title: Cpap stuffy nose
Description: Difficulty breathing/ripping mask off

SleepyinSalem - May 10, 2006 05:57 PM (GMT)
Hi all,
First off, this forum has been so helpful in advocating for myself while going through this process. I have been on the CPAP using the Comfortlite 2 system with nasal pillows for the last four weeks. It was going okay, however, in the last week, I find myself ripping the mask off after about 2 hours with no memory of doing so.
I have noticed that I have been stuffed up at night, possibly due to a cold or allergies and have read that this can interfere with the effectiveness of the machine. I have been having difficulty with breathing (previously a mouth breather) and didn't have that in the beginning. I have been getting very discouraged as my use has went from five hours a night (with noticeable effects) to two hours and I am tired. I'm not sure how to resolve this issue and am wondering what is going on? Does anyone have any experience with this???
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello SleepyinSalem. My Cpap came with two different style masks. One covers my nose completley. I think it's referred to as a cushion. The other fits into my nostrils, and I think that it's referred to as pillows. Do I have that right? Anyway, first I used the one that covers my nose, but because it leaked air when I moved, I decided after a few nights to try the one that inserts into my nostrils. I awoke gasping in a panic and thinking I couldn't breathe. Having those pillows stuck up my nosrtils made me feel like my nose was all stuffed up. Could that be your problem? Have you tried the mask that covers your entire nose? I went back to that one. Also, does your Cpap have a humidifier with a heater? That might help your stuffiness too. Good luck. I've had my Cpap now for almost a month, and I'm still trying to get used to it. Sometimes I feel like tearing it off, but I'm determined to make it work.
