Title: Is my problem Sleep Apnea?
Description: Sleep Apnea?

Ned - July 11, 2005 02:09 PM (GMT)
Hello, I am trying to find out what is wrong with me. I have been told recently that my blood pressure is way to high. It has never been before and it doesn't run in my family. The only thing that I noticed off and on is that sometimes I wake up not being able to breath. I also notice when I finally wake up early in the morning I have a bad headache. the one thing I read about sleep apnea is about snoring, I don't snore. Is it possible to have it without snoring? Also I have a problem with dairy products but have been drinking milk anyway for the calcium (and I like it), when I do drink this milk the night before I notice I also have bad indigestion when I'm sleeping. Could bad indigestion cause sleep apnea? I wake up belching alot. Also I sometimes feel like I have pressure on the back of my head, very odd feeling, same spot all the time. Anyway the doctor gave me a few months of exercise and low sodium diet but so far it has no effect on blood pressure. What does anybody think?

Ned - welcome to Apnea Board!

You mentioned that you don't snore; just wondering if you're sure of that? (does your partner say that you don't snore, or do you just 'think' you don't snore).

I didn't think I snored that much either (my wife is a very sound sleeper). But when I visit my parents and/or inlaws, they notice that I snore very heavily. (without CPAP).

Are you tired late in the afternoon? Do you lack energy during the day?

You may want to read the Sleep Apnea info on our home page at:

www.ApneaBoard.com

And take the daytime sleepiness test at:

http://www.apneaboard.com/quiz.htm

That will give additional clues as to whether you have Sleep Apnea.

I had some of the same problems years ago.
The doctors ran a few test and found out I had a valve to my stomach that was not closing. In other words I was chocking on my own crap at night.
My blood pressure was through the roof. Years later they finaly did a sleep study and also found out I had apnea. So I would say the only way to find out what is wrong is to have some test like a sleep study and a cat scan on your innerds.
