For an immeasurable time, stray dogs have roamed the forests, valleys, and eventually the cities built by humans. These animals scratched themselves out a living from the earth and, in later times, scavenged off of the refuse left behind in the humans' trail. Even in times when food was plentiful, that did not neccessarily make it easy to catch and many of these dogs stayed near civilization, ensuring them higher survival rates that surpassed even the danger posed by their domestic neighbors. They were ferals, not able to live peacably with humans yet relying on them in a way most unnatural for canids.
It seems that all would be well and that the dogs would be happy and content, able to live off of the pickings left for them, even purposely, by humans. Unfortunately, it was not to be so and where there was food to be found, many dogs would gather to fight for their share, competition fierce and sometimes even deadly. Once the matter of food was taken care of, they would still have to avoid the humans lest they be seen as either a threat or pest and have someone set out to rid the towns of them. Then there was the problem of weather. Both extreme heat and bitter cold were nothing if not a normal seasonal change, and it made the dogs suffer greatly. Their young could be born sick or even healthy and then starve during hard times.
Now, there are major packs gathering members and building their ranks, prepared to fight for what they believe in or provide a peaceful refuge for those who wish to remain unharmed. Arguments often leave bitter feelings that can last for generations, not surprising considering the lives of many dogs hang in the balance. In the end, only the strong survive.
