“I’m home haven’t you heard the ring…”

For decades, wolves have always been a feared and hunted species, prone to death by a myriad of reasons. The presence of extinction has always tainted their blood; death lurking right around the corner. It has always been a debate whether or not the animals should simply be hunted down and killed, or allowed a sanctuary in the world turned against them. Humans simply refuse to see the good in wolves, and believe them to be the source of many problems.

With the decreasing habitats, and the increasing amount of hunters, wolves stood little to no chance of survival. And although there have been many opportunities to relocate the wolves to a safer place, no one has ever attempted the feat. Until a group of seven took the risk, hoping to save a magnificent species from a terrible end. With a common goal in mind, to allow the wolves a place to live without fear, the small group began their task. With a sturdy beginning group of nine wolves from across the United States and Canada, the group of men took the wolves to a large island off the coast of Kodiak Island.

For a time, everything ran smoothly. Just over 20 wolves now populated the island, growing with each passing year with the offspring of the Alphas. Game was plentiful for the thriving pack, and the weather was never too harsh for survival. The group of men soon fell into a pattern of bringing the new arrivals of wolves to the island every fall, usually in batches of three or four. Soon, the humans began observing the behavior of the wolves and documenting their research.

This continued for several years, until the Alpha pair passed away. From then on, chaos was wrought upon the lands as wolves fought amongst themselves. Outcasts from the pack challenged others, and deaths were frequent. Although the men would have liked to help the situation, there was nothing they could do to calm the beasts. And so, they stopped bringing new wolves onto the island, and their visits remained few and more spread apart. When at last they returned to the island, things seemed to have calmed down quite a bit. The aggression in the wolves had lowered immensely, and everything seemed to be in working order, with the watchful eyes of a new Alpha.

For now, things remain calm on the island, with only the occasional spar over the usual. But how long can this serenity last in the midst of a f r a c t u r e d hope
