Title: Dog Breeds
Description: What's your fave &/or least fave?
RainbowBriteRox81 - October 15, 2005 09:37 PM (GMT)
At the suggestion of berryelvish, :D I decided to start a new topic on dogs. What are your favorite breeds/types? What are your least favorites?
My favorites are Shar Peis, Jack Russell Terriers, and Labradors. I like just about any type of dog really, but my least favorite are Chihuahuas.
Berryblue - October 15, 2005 11:15 PM (GMT)
I really love all dogs in general but will always love larger breeds over smaller ones. The smaller breeds, in general, seem to have more whiny temperments. lol I have seen way too many yippy, princess type small breeds.
Of course, I'm not saying that ALL small breeds are this way.
Really it comes down to temperment rather than breed.
As far as aesthetically, I love the look of a lab as well as personality/temperment. I love the way labs are overall. They are so funny, especially when you leave for 20 min. and come back and they fall over you like they haven't seen you in YEARS! LOL!!
I am quite biased though since my beautiful black lab mix is the perfect match (personality wise) for me. :love
mary - October 16, 2005 03:21 AM (GMT)
i love pitbulls and bull terriers and other large breeds, pitbulls make great pets and family dogs despite all the bad publicity and believe me they are great, in all my years at the shelter i have seen more friendly ones than aggressive and rarely do i see a small dog, sharpei or chow (those are the most tempermental and non friendly) that is friendly
sorry i always feel the need to lecture when it comes to dogs, its habit i always have do it with the customers
berry elvish - October 16, 2005 06:06 AM (GMT)
My favorite breed? I'd have to go with herding dogs. The Queensland Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) is my absolute most favorite breed of dog and if I am ever in the position of finally having time for a dog, maybe in my retirement, that is the sort I'm going to be on the look-out for. :D

I've had friends with Labs, and every one that I've come in contact with has been very loving & playful. I love that about them. I've always wanted a chocolate Lab. I think in all honesty, it'd be the best match for me also.
I have a disability known as Cerebral Palsy *CP,* which affects my motor skills. I tend to lose my balance easily, so having a larger dog around *when I'm alone* would be ideal.

I don't find that you're lecturing at all, Mary. In fact, I think it's very interesting. My fiance's brother-in-law have a pit bull, and he is very sweet & gentle. The thing I like about Shar-Peis is their wrinkly coat. It's so cute to me ^_^

Those are very pretty dogs, IMHO. I hope you are able to get one someday, Melanie. :hkhappy
mary - October 18, 2005 02:53 PM (GMT)
i think you might be better off with a lab than a jack russell there are labs and other breeds that are trained to specifically fit the needs of people with C.P. and other disabilities
RainbowBriteRox81 - October 18, 2005 11:27 PM (GMT)
That's true. I watch Animal Planet all the time, and see labs & other large breeds trained for that kind of thing. That would suit me very well. And I'd love the companionship.
Bren41882 - October 19, 2005 12:44 AM (GMT)
I love all dogs but I have a special liking for Shar Pei's.
berry elvish - October 19, 2005 04:03 PM (GMT)
I used to think Shar-Peis were IT when I was a kid. They are adorable. :D  We always had pitbulls growing up. My aunt had one, Nitro is his name and he was married to a beauty named Phoenix. They've had a dozen litters over the years (that is an exaggeration, I have no idea how many litters they've had!) and out of their first litter, my Granny got a beautiful brindle pup. Rikka grew to be mated once with Mighty Joe King and we got a handsome youngin' out of her litter and named him Ringo. My Granny kept one of Rikka's sons and name him Nitro after his grandpa. All of these pits are passed on now, but I just wanted to second Mary's comment that most are great and loving dogs. It's not the dogs themselves that inherently evil, it's the breeders who beat them and abuse them and breed them.
Berryblue - October 19, 2005 05:43 PM (GMT)
SOoooo true. I cannot STAND breed specific discrimination!!!
It is up to owners/caregivers to train their dogs right from the second they are part of the family. I've heard of so many owners actually training these dogs to be aggressive. It just isn't right that the entire breed, and even those who have a similar look, has/have to suffer.
And labs are beautiful and wonderful friends.
C'mon...how can you say no to this cute face? lol

Asia is soooo beautiful, Erin and she just looks happy. :)

I love maltepoos (maltese-poodle mix). They don't shed, and they're really sweet. But, I like them when they're hair is cut like a schnauzer (I also like mini schnauzers), cause they look cuter. (can you tell I used to have one?) I want to get another one, a female. they're just so sweet!
My sister-in-law's mother had a family emergency, and needed someone to watch her Shar-Pei puppies for her. She kept the mother for protection in her home, but the 8 puppies came to my sister-in-law. My sis-in-law had to work, and I just happened to live there at the time, so the caring of them fell on me. I had to make them bottles of formula and feed them every 2 hours like a newborn. it was sooooo exhausting!!! I felt like I was taking care of 8 babies at once! only instead of changing diapers, I was cleaning up poop. I slept on the ground next to them. But I have to tell you... I really grew to love those puppies and was really sad to see them leave when they time came for them to go back home. they were really cute.
I also love labs... I love their temperment! they're always so happy and loving! I've been thinking of getting a lab lately. I love their soft coats!
I do have a liking for smaller dogs though. I like yorkies, just can't afford one! :(

My aunt had one of those when I was younger. She was such a sweet dog. ^_^

My fiance's aunt has a Yorkie. His name is Corky. They couldn't ask for a better dog. He has skin problems though, and he is at least 12yrs. old. :(
mary - October 21, 2005 11:39 PM (GMT)
but you can afford a yorkie just go to your local shelter, believe me you will find one, probably not a puppy though, and besides puppies and purebred dogs are waaaay overrated.
and these pekapoos and maltepoos are just another way of creating expensive mixed breed dogs.(will the over population ever stop

we gotta post some pics of our pets, i gotta get a good picture of all them, probably not together though
RainbowBriteRox81 - October 24, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
Here are pics of my babies. I miss them, but at least I know they've gone to good homes. I had to find new homes for them after my fiance' got relocated out of state because of work, and I couldn't keep them here at Mom's with such a small living space.
Lexi

 Errr, I don't have a dog...yet! But, I do have three sweeties living with me. Here's a pic of two of them and my daughter...so technically it's a pic of three sweeties, just not the three I was talking about! :hkhappy I have another little baby girl that looks a lot like Kiyoshi...just she has black gaurd hairs, instead of cinnamon and she's fluffier and shorter. I need to get a pic of her, but for now, meet Kiyoshi and Kiyokio...pic of Chiara to come. Also, Kiyoshi is six this year and Kiyokio is two.
mary - October 24, 2005 11:44 PM (GMT)

1u11aby1ambie - October 25, 2005 07:49 PM (GMT)
Awww... I like Kiyoshi's fur!! I guess I don't have a favorite dog, but when I was younger, I liked cockerspaniels. I liked the ears 'cause they looked like long hair! LOL

My fiance's parents' have a black/tan German Shephard named Boomer. He's such a great dog. Everytime I go over for a visit, he greets me at my car & walks me to the door. He's adorable.

AWwwwww more pics !!! YAY!!
Shan, the dogs are soooo cute!! It is nice that they have good homes but also sad for you. Hopefully, you'll be able to get another dog or two once you are settled in again. :)
Melanie! OMG they are adorable and they did get so big. I remember seeing them when they were much smaller! HOW CUTE! And look at Taigan there too! Aww so cute all together! :love
Joyce, I love cockerspaniels. Their ears are so cute but it's their paws that crack me up! Mike's grandparents new dog and their last dog was a cocker and I laugh every time! I always say they look like muppets!

Yeah, I miss them everyday. But I have wonderful memories, which helps sooo much.
I got some optimistic news tonight. Nick is looking into getting an 11mo old Saint Bernard named Rachel. He is going to meet with some people who have her when he gets off of work. They have agreed to meet with him at a local clinic since Rachel needs the last of her shots, and Nick would be able to find his way there, since he's still new to the area. He will get to meet her tomorrow hopefully. I have a feeling he'll be getting her papers and taking her home ^_^ He has a roommate who has a dog too, but he could use the company. I just wish I could meet her with him. But then again, if I did, there'd be no way he could let her go

Shan! I know exactly what you mean. St. Bernards are pretty neat dogs. My cousins had one named Kegger and he was super laid back.
I think Cockerspaniels are beautiful little dogs and they were a very popular breed to have in the 80's. I love the 80's. *sigh
I really need to get some new pictures of my ferrets! Kiyoshi is an old man now. And Kiyokio is one of the larger ferrets I've owned. I'm not sure how much larger ferrets get, but I've had three males that were between 3 and 5 lbs each and over a foot long, so I kind of think that is average. Kiyoshi is the exception. He's always been small, like a female ferret. So, compared to him, the other boys always seem HUGE. I'm afraid to let the little fuzzies out today because we have so much candy lying around. ;) Ya'll don't know this story, so I'm going to tell it to you. After Kiyoshi's first Halloween I caught him running off with a piece of candy towards this old couch we had in the dining area. I caught up to him, but he slipped under before I could catch him. I lifted up the corner of the couch and there was a hole dug in the lining where Kiyoshi and Peppino (his cage mate) would get into the couch for naps. Well, as I lifted I heard a sliding sound. And upon closer inspection saw Kiyoshi inside the couch on top of a hoard of candy! After I got it all out, it had to be about 2.5 lbs of candy. Ferrets are funny.

Yeah, Melanie. Kegger is a great name for a St. Bernard. :D I'm such a softie ^_^ Luckily, so is Nick. He's been home sick all day, though. :( Hopefully, he'll be feeling well enough to check Rachel out this evening. :crosses fingers:

Erin, I love your pet pals webpages! OMG, I didn't see that picture of Asia and Hobbes together before, it's so super cute! And Hobbes looks so funny. I haven't really seen very many pictures of him either...he's just lounging all over the place...so silly.
Berryblue - November 17, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
That cat is a goof! He is such a bad **s too it's not even funny! He snaps back at you if you tell him no and he'll try to grab things right out of your hands if he feels like he wants it. lol He is all attitude. lol
I will have to show you more pics of him. He is usually pretty boring to take pictures of since he's always sleeping...lol
Actually, I can rarely get pictures of Asia sitting or standing. lol She's always sleeping around here too. LOL
I will be adding more pics to dogster and catster as I get them though...so feel free to keep checking them everyone :)
