Hey, all, it's September first, Thursday and I'm in the midst of packing for my trip to
Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA. I'm heading out today and I'll be back late Sunday night, so I'll see you all on Monday. :D
I'm super excited to attend and this is my first time. Jon and I are calling this our honeymoon/first year anniversary/second year anniversary vacation. :D I'll miss the board and all of you members. Take care and have a safe Labor Day weekend!

I'm back and I had a blast! I've had to catch up on things at home and get some much needed sleep, so I haven't been online much. I didn't even take that many pictures because I was so busy the entire four days! Jon has more pictures and better ones too, I imagine since I didn't even figure out how to use my camera correctly until the last day! Duh! The highlight of the even was getting nearly a front row seat for the first Battlestar Galactica panel on the first day of the con. It was a cool moment. Richard Hatch was the guest speaker and he was out of the loop because he didn't know that he'd be going it alone since Jamie Bamber and James Callis were called back to Vancouver for filming. It was funny because all of the audience knew. He was so great and what a really passionate and personable guy! I know Jon has some great pics of him...mine aren't so good. I've wanted to attend the Dragon*Con for a few years now, but I always imagined I'd be hanging out with all of the other fantasy geeks. LOL, but instead I went to Sci-Fi panel after Sci-Fi panel: 3 different BSG panels featuring: Richard Hatch and/or Tricia Helfer; 2 Stargate panels, one just Paul McGillion (Atlantis) and one with Alexis Cruz, Gary Jones, Carmen Argenziano and Paul McGillion; a Farscape panel featuring Raelee Hill, Virginia Hey and Gigi Edgley; a Firefly panel featuring Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite and Ron Glass; the Star Wars Costume Contest;an Adult Swim panel featuring the guys who run adult swim including previews of upcoming shows; a night of Star Wars fan films screening; the Masquerade; Janny Wurts reading; and countless trips through the venders rooms, art show, and game room. The thing is huge! And I didn't attend a single fantasy panel/event except that Janny Wurts reading. She's rad, by the way!
Erin, we did not wear costumes. I didn't have time to make any and Jon said he didn't want to wear anything that didn't look like he tried his best to make it look good. So, we might start on our costumes for next year soon. We have discussed going as Daniel and Vala (from this season of Stargate SG-1), but I don't think I can pull off Vala. LOL

Oh my!!! Sounds like you had such a great time!!! OK... so what's the difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy? LOL Sci-Fi is like futuristic and Fantasy is like mythical?
berry elvish - September 8, 2005 11:53 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, the difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy, you ask? :blush That is really a tough call, especially since the two often cross-over into the other. I'd say that you probably have it right with the sci-fi being more futuristic and the fantasy being more mythical. I would actually say that it's sort of divided by the level of technology in play. For example in a lot of sci-fi, they have weapons, computers, robots, flying capability, etc. And in fantasy, it would be more like our Medievil times, except that people are usually smarter in fantasy novels. LOL And if there is any technology (as we know it) it'd probably be more magic/earth based. Harry Potter is a great example of fantasy and I, Robot a good example of Sci-Fi. Though, it's all escapist to some degree. I wanted to dress up like an elf or wear a Hogwarts uniform, but it just didn't happen.

Glad you had a great time! How fun to get away with Jon and spend some time actually doing something you both thoroughly enjoy! Sounds like you had a blast! and how cool that you're going to go again next year! :hkhappy

OMG wait until Mike hears about BSG panel and your near front row seats!! We were thinking of you the whole weekend!! Mike kept saying that he wondered how Dragon*Con was! lol I am going to have to get his butt in here so he can read what/who you saw there! He just got this vintage Battlestar board game and he's been watching the episodes like crazy.
You'll have to forward some of those pics you got, girl! lol
It's too bad you didn't get to make/wear any costumes but it is completely understandable. You've been SUPER busy and that would've been crazy to just try to "whip" something together so it was a good call not to wear any. But, if you go next year, you guys will have to wear some! lol Actually we'd love to go to something like that too but they are usually so far away...unless it was in the Northeast US or in Ontario or something.
Anyway, I've been wondering how you have been!! I miss chatting!!
Emails will be on their way...you can count on it! :D

Oh, Erin, just thought I'd say that you should check out flights from your area to Atlanta...it's like one of those major places that people go. We got such good round trip prices and had we waited until the week before we could have gotten an even sweeter deal! Jon wanted to do it via expedia though, so we had our plane tickets and hotel reservations at the same time. I think a round trip flight was $238/person.
I haven't been online for days, it seems and with my job and everything I find very little time for fun! Right now, I am in Kindred's room, in the dark, while he's asleep. I had to move my computer in here so I could run a line directly from our router to my pc just to be able to get online. But! I have planned to email you some images very soon! I still need to get Jon's pics off his camera. I know he has some good ones....like the giant LEGO Vader. :P

Hey Melanie!
Ok, I know I've been out of the loop. :) I have two words for you: holy crap!
That is soooo freakin' cool :) Wow... Ok it's out of the way. I'm more than certain I would've loved being there for plenty of those panels. Toronto has a huge sci-fi, comic, horror, and anime festival in August and another in April. I've been to one in the past and may have to go this April, since the guest of honor will be none other than Stan "I created most of the Marvel Universe" Lee. LOL
I look forward to seeing your pics when Erin gets 'em.
BTW, I'm sooo enjoying the latest episodes of BSG. (I just couldn't wait for the Canadian airing.)

Ahrian - September 18, 2005 04:04 AM (GMT)
Hi, i was at Dragon Con too on Saturday only though.
I hadn't been in such a long time! hehe!
berry elvish - September 19, 2005 11:54 PM (GMT)
Well, hey, Ahrian. :D What was your favorite D*C thing about that Saturday? :D How many times have you been? I think it was the greatest Con I've ever been to and can not wait to go again!
Hey Croww. OMG, I know just what you mean about BSG...it just gets better and better. :D We're watching last Friday's episode tonight. :D (I work on Sci-Fi Friday now! )
Speaking of Science Fiction shows...anyone here watching LOST on abc (I think!)? I just finished watching season 1 on DVD and I'm hooked. I actually called DirecTv and had them add our local channels (for a monthly fee, of course!) just so I could get a season pass on Tivo for it. It's so good that I have a very hard time believing it's a network tv show. ;)
