Title: My new addition...

Berryblue - August 30, 2005 05:13 PM (GMT)
Last night we adopted a beautiful 3 year old female black lab x from the humane society and omg I am sooooooooo happy. She is gorgeous. Her name is Asia and she is so well behaved and trained it is beyond belief. She is super quiet inside and follows me room to room to sleep and when you take her outside she is all lab! It is just awesome. She is amazing and I am so happy to have found her.
Here she is:

After her bath last night, I already put my red classic SSC bandana (the one from Claires) on her. LOL

That is so great! I am always amazed at the dogs people get at the Humane society. They are always so well behaved and sweet. I can't figure out why they end up there....oh yeah its the morons that put them there.
I absolutely hate people that get a dog as soon as they get a house and expect it to be perfectly trained from birth. Ooops, it pooped on the rug, better get rid of it.

I am happy for you and Asia. I think it takes a special person to go to the humane society. I am a coward, I have never went because I am afraid that I won't be able to choose. I have been known to cry in public where animals are concerned.

Take care and enjoy those walks. Those are the best times that I have with my dog (besides the brushing and the snuggling and the playing and the kisses). Give her a kiss and a treat from Amy!

:poochie Okay, so when is her birthday, so I can send her a card? :D She's gorgeous and I love her. Congratulations and I know she is going to be so happy with you guys. :D

Thanks girls! :love
Amy, I totally know what you mean and share your frustration with people who decide they want a dog but don't want the work and responsibility of actually caring for one. Most of the dogs at the humane society are there by no fault of their own. It isn't that the dog has a problem--- it's the people who do. For instance, one dog was just soooo sweet and the only reason she was there was because she was "too big" for the owners. Her temperment was beautiful. If I had the room, I'd have taken her too. Thank God the humane society is a no kill facility. I just couldn't go into a place that was. That would totally do me in, for sure. I do have the urge to "save" them all though and I would if I could.

Asia is already sooooo spoiled already. lol I love her SO much and just can't stop smiling at her and telling her how good and sweet she is. She's been going over to a closeby park with me and we already have a certain area along the small beach where we run a bit. She loves it and I am so happy to see her enjoying herself so much.

She's an absolute angel when we leave her too. I was a little worried about seperation anxiety (especially being that she was in a shelter where it is common for one to be more upset) but she is soooo good. We leave her and she just sleeps by the door waiting for us to come back. lol This is so new to us, since our last dog was wasn't nearly as calm and had to be crate trained. So, all around, I am just in awe of her - her incredible intelligence, loyalty, and kindness to every living thing she's come in contact with. Sorry for the sappy-ness but I have to say, I am truly lucky :love

congrats Erin! Labs are such loyal loving dogs! Our neighbor has one, and I just love his! they're just so nice! I'm so glad you found a nice, lovable pet!

really? our humane society euthanizes the animals if they're not adopted out in a period of time, like a couple weeks or a month... I'm not sure. I honestly feel that if they lowered the price of the animals, they'd find more homes for them. But, they said they keep the price high so that they know they're going to good homes... but there's people like me, who would give an animal a good home, but just can't afford $75-$95 for a kitten... so I'll get one of the free ones from the paper! :(

but really, congrats Erin!

mary - September 12, 2005 03:21 AM (GMT)
wonderberry,
the adoption fees barely cover the costs of what it takes to care for the animals, if you get a free one from the paper it will cost you more in the long run spay/neuter can be more than 100.00 plus vaccines and microchipping, feline leukemia and feline aids tests all together can cost well over 300.00, the shelter i work for charges 30.00 for cats. microchip and FELV/FIV testing is 20.00 extra, so the shelter prices are actually bargains ;)

wonderberry - September 12, 2005 12:23 PM (GMT)
it may be different in your area... they charge here for the spaying and neutering for adoption, even if it had already been done when the animal was donated. and when you donate an animal here, you have to provide the food and bedding, carrier, etc. But, I honestly feel that if a person really cares for their animal and wants them to find a home, they wouldn't mind buying extra food... and it's not like they'll still need the carriers and stuff anyways.

I, personally, paid $35 total to get both my cats spayed and neutered ($20 for the female, $15 for the male). Then I buy the shots myself at $2.00-$2.50 (depending on the shot)... but I understand what you mean!! I can see where someone would end up paying more in vet fees if they didn't know how to administer the shots themselves.

Yes, I think your shelter prices really are a bargain! do you like working there? I used to work in a pet store when I was a teenager, and I loved it. They didn't sell cats or dogs though. They promoted adopting them, which I liked.

Hey Erin, did you rename your dog? or did you keep her name?

mary - September 13, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
wow thats pretty good it costs around 100-200 to spay or neuter here, and 2.50 for shots i can't believe it, its like 40 per shot here,
i did enjoy it when i first started but now its time for me to move on, i am soooo sick of hearing peoples stupid excuses and lies about why they can't keep their animals i can't take it anymore, and with this new executive director all he seems to care about is numbers, there is way too much politics involved.
hey maybe we should all post pics of our pets,

Berryblue - September 15, 2005 06:36 PM (GMT)
Where I am, it is also MUCH cheaper to buy a dog or cat from the Humane Society or another similar shelter. The cost of spaying/neutering here is along the lines of where Mary is and shots are about the same in the end as the spay/neuter so you'd be spending over $200 PLUS however much the dog/cat cost, unless of course, if you get one for free from someone looking to find a new home for their pet. We did look at one dog that was to be given away that had all his shots and was neutered but I really, really wanted to rescue a dog and I knew that the owners of this other dog would not let their dog go to a bad home so I wasn't worried.

We were told that the man who found her (in the house that he bought) called her Asia so we use that. At the Humane Society they called her "Gabby" for the couple months she was there though. We didn't want to keep the name they gave because Mike had a friend that passed away in HS who had the same name and when we were told that he called her Asia we liked it :)

We don't know her birthdate since we don't know her whole history.
On the humane society's site they said her DOB was July 2003 but they couldn't give us a date and didn't even mention that one. But we were only told she was around 3. According to that DOB though, it would make her 2. SO, anyway, I think we'll be making her birthday October 31st (our cat's is October 30th and we like Halloween) and we'll say she is 3 then.

It is amazing how somebody took all the time when raising her to train her extremely well and then just left her behind. And, I can tell that no one ever physically abused her. She never flinches at movements or anything like that. She lays next to me when I do aerobics and sleeps not even caring that I am jumping around next to her. lol She is a little scared of thunderstorms and noises that are made when the wind blows really hard.

It is funny how much I miss her when I leave to go to the store or something. lol I truly and honestly cannot wait to get home to see her and she is SO happy every time I walk in. lol She just makes me sooooo happy. I know I have said it a million times over...lol :love

Look how pretty she is!

October 31st is a great birthday (wouldn't you agree, Joyce?)! I also love Halloween and I'm excited to get started making the kids' costumes. Taigan wants to be a :ph43r: ninja. I'm so happy that Asia is with you now. I was telling Iian today how much I'd love to have a dog. He asked why I didn't get one and I told him that I couldn't because I had three kids and 3 ferrets already. I just can't give the time required to a dog right now. Someday....*sigh*...I will have one though. Asia really is beautiful, Erin. I took in a dog once and briefly that looked very much like her. We called her Thyme. Labs rock!

Oct. 31st is a fabulous birthday!!! ;) LOL I can't believe you got such a great dog from the Humane Society! And I don't see why anyone would just abandon her in that house!!! She is so well behaved... that is a dream pet. :)

My former landlord's daughter had a pug that we'd dog-sit even once in a while... but that doggie was hyper! I could not have bare feet when she was around or she'd lick my toes! And if I went in the kitchen, she'd whine and beg for food! She was cute though. :)

wonderberry - September 18, 2005 01:11 PM (GMT)
I was wondering if maybe Asia ran away from the previous owners. Maybe she was afraid of the move, and just went back to her house. I can't imagine anyone leaving behind such a perfect dog either! I know when I was a kid, I had a pet chow lab mix that was given to my siblings and I as a gift. This dog was so gentle and sweet. I loved her so much, but my parents didn't like pets, and made me give her away. The new owners picked her up and drove her to their house across town. When they opened the van to take her out, she jumped out of the van and took off running. They called me and said she ran away, and I cried. Then, 5 days later, I woke up to a dog bark and scratching at my bedroom window. I got up and looked outside, and there was my dog!! I ran outside and hugged her, and I was so happy. She'd found her way all the way back home. (my parents waited a week and still made me give her away to those people, but they gave her a good home and she became a good pet to them).

if I got my cats' shots at the vet, it would cost me $20 per cat, but when I say $2-$2.50 a shot, that's because I buy them at a pet warehouse and administer them myself (actually, my friend Sherry does it for me). :kitty

Someday I am sure you will get a dog and I will be so happy for you, Melanie! :love I think you are doing the right thing by waiting until you have the appropriate amount of time to dedicate to a dog though. It's too bad all pet owners weren't more like you. ((hugs))

Btw...how cute that Taigan wants to be a ninja!! LOL I can't wait to see her all in costume! :D

Joyce, I was thinking about your poor toes and that hyper dog! Did the dog ever hurt your toes too because if its nails. I know my beloved Maxwell would always throw his paw on the floor so furiously that my toes would sometimes get all scratched. lol I knew the 31st was your birthday Joyce and now you and Asia both can have yours together! YAY! lol I have been wanting to make her homemade dog biscuits so I think I try it soon and definitely for her birthday. I just got some recipes that sound pretty good. I guess I'll find out how good once she tries them though. lol

And you know... Cindie, I had never thought of that. I am "hoping" that is really what happened. I cannot believe that anyone would take that much care in teaching her all she knows and then just abandoning her. I mean, I understand that your life sometimes changes on a dime and you need to alter your living arrangements suddenly at times, but I can't imagine someone just leaving her behind. I can't even take leaving her for an hour let alone LEAVING her. Which reminds me...the guy that lives in the basement apt. offered to watch her anytime...it doesn't matter...and I was telling Mike, yeah right. LOL I can't imagine even leaving her with anyone to be dog sat. She's coming with me! LOL It was super nice of him to just offer like that. That is really hard to come by...
