Title: Chinese Jumpropes!
Description: I want one.

I was going to post about Chinese Jumpropes the other day, but ended up going off in search of unidentified toys/dolls instead. But, I just read in another post where childofthe80s mentioned them. Did anyone else play this game? :D We spent hours on the elementary school playground playing this. All you needed were three people and a Chinese Jumprope. :D I don't really remember how we used to sing it. Something like: Itsy, Me, Saw, She, Loco, Hot-see, Yhatzee, Kill-it! I'd bet that others said it differently or maybe someone can correct me on my memory. Then, after we went through it one time without messing up, we'd do doubles. Then triples...after that I can't remember. Anyone have any memories of this game????

Oh, I guess I can add a question in here too, eh? Does anyone know where to get a Chinese Jumprope and do they have instructions? I'd love to know the 'real' way to play. :D Oh, and I wonder if I can start a fad at the elementary school in a couple of years when Taigan goes. :D :P

:bigbird Hey berry! Yes I still have my original one from elementary school! (It is green and white) As far as how to play, I have forgotten over the years, but I use to know. I DO remember they came with instructions. :elf

I will definately keep my eyes open for one for you. :cheesecake

I remember playing it... we played it differently... it'd go "in, out, side-by-side, on, in, out" (The "on" was the hard part)... and once you made it through once, you'd move the rope up higher and go again. Now that I think about it... it seems really dangerous that we'd jump "in" and "out" when the rope was like up to people's waists/chests! Lots of times we'd trip and fall! There were other games we played with in... like I remember some that we'd cross the rope, but the above one was the one we played most often.

I'm not sure where to buy them... but I thought I had seen them at Claire's before, or maybe in the children's book section like at Borders (like one of those "activity" type books that come with stuff).

I can get them at our local dollor store for you. The ones the sell are elastic and you play it like cats cradle with your legs.

thats the way we used to play it too lullably lambie something similar, i remember i used to like that too in elementary school being that i was no good at regular jump rope, and my best freind was great at double dutch

Bren...would you, pretty please?? I really want one and have for the longest time! Email me. :D

Joyce, I think we played it similarly. It was: side (itsy), other side (me), side again (saw), other side again (she), both feet in the middle (loco), both feet outside (straddle) (hotsie), then back to the middle (yhatzee), then we jumped on top of it (kill it). And at each successful 'kill' we would then move it up, I had totally forgotten that part. So, after successfully completing a turn all the way up to the waist height, then we'd start over with doubles. That makes more sense to me now.

I know I've seen the Chinese Jumpropes on the net but they were always four bucks or more and I remember that I used to get them for a buck or less when I was a kid. I thought for sure they still sold them cheaply somewhere out in CA or something, but I always forget to have people look for me. :D

I've never seen a chinese jumprope at a dollar store! How cool! I think I only saw them like in one of those book sets, which are normally expensive. (Like they have book sets for jacks, friendship bracelets, etc.) When I was by myself without anyone to play with... I hooked the rope around chair legs! LOL

I have a journal entry about playing chinese jumprope, and I was mad because my sister and cousin cheated and put the ropes out too far. our chant went like this:

chin-chin-China men. chop-chop-sui. Sittin' in a Chinese shop, eating chop-sui. In'ems, out'ems, round-a-'bout'ems. Criss-cross, applesauce! :ph43r:

You jump from the left side, to the right side, until you get to the end. Now, for in'ems, it was both feet in. For out'ems, it was both feet out. round about'ems, you'd bring your ankles together with both sides of the rope between your ankles. Then you'd turn around so the rope made an S shape and jump up, landing with both feet outside of the rope, facing the opposite way. then for criss-cross it gets complicated. You take your right foot, and with the outside of your ankle, you pull the left side of the rope over to the right side. You do the exact same with your left foot, pulling the right side over, so the sides are "criss-crossing" each other. then you say "applesauce" as you jump and land with both feet inside the ropes.

if you pass it all, you raise the rope to your shins. then your knees, then your thighs... and no one really made it past there. While jumping side to side, if your ankle hit the rope at any time, you had to do it again. In fact, if I remember right, that was my qualm in the journal entry... that my ankle hit the rope and they said I had to do it again, and I was a poor sport about it. LOL

Cindie! Yes, we also did something with crossing our legs in the rope and twisting to create a diamond shape. That must have been what Bren was talking about when she said you played it like cat's cradle! I now know that there is much more to the Chinese Jumprope song and moves than I can remember. Cindie, you'll have to draw me some instructions. :D

I never used mine for actual Chinese jump rope. My cousin and I used ours to play endless games of Cats Cradle while we talked about anything and everything on long car trips.

I was still playing Cats Cradle when I was a Nanny, in my late teens.

:hkhappy

I found a package of four of them at Party City when I was buying party favors for my son's birthday party this past weekend! Hooray! I got one, now to teach my kids how to play it. :D
