Title: Star Wars Trilogy Dvd
Description: C'mon Lucas...

is that really a neccessary change?! Okay, so I've heard all kinds of insanity concerning the new trilogy release. George Lucas again made 'revisions' to the original movies. I really loved the Special Edition release where Lucas enhanced the visuals and cleaned up some pretty messy scenes. I like the additions to the town of Mos Eisley, like more people and animals walking around (bring on the Dewbacks and Rontos!)...it seemed more like a hub. I liked the way he added more Stormtroopers in some scenes and more tie fighters in others...it really did enhance the films. But with this new release I have heard some details that have made me roll my eyes at Lucas...yet again. (I have a few quibbles about the new movies). I heard that George Lucas replaced the ghost image of Anikin in Jedi with the 'new' Anikin (Hayden Christensen). What?! Why!? Both Obi-wan and Yoda look just as they did when they died, why not Anikin too? He also redubbed Bobba Fett's voice with (the actor who played) Jengo Fett's voice! His reasoning (I heard) was that it was better for the continuity of the story because Bobba is Jengo's clone. My response: Yeah, well, Bobba lost his 'father' when he was about ten, so he had a good many years to grow up and it is not neccessary that he have the exact same accent as his 'father', since who knows who he was raised by after that. Besides, Bobba speaks through a voice modulator and a helmet! And I also heard, not sure if this is true, but I heard that Lucas had James Earl Jones redub the voice of Vader during the most famous part of Empire...when Vader says, "I am your father." And then Luke says, "no, it can't be true..." and screams, "no! no!" It is supposed to be redubbed back to the original (fake) script line of "Obi-wan killed your father" What?! Why!? I heard it was because everyone knows that Vader is Lukes father and it doesn't have any shock value anymore. My response is "lucas, you've gone mad". Not everyone knows that Vader is Luke's father, for example, Luke doesn't!
Ugh! The one that made me the most upset was the Anikin ghost thing. I actually have only watched the Bonus Disk as of right now...it rocks by the way and is totally worth buying...but we did skip to the celebration scene of Jedi to have a look at this new Anikin scene. I don't like the idea, but WHAM! Hayden grew up and is super fly now! I thought he was a really ugly guy in Clones, but he grew into that ugly mug and is now a very handsome man, and since I can appreciate the beauty of the male form, I'm not quite so miffed about Lucas' 'improvement.
LOL!
Has anyone else watched the new dvd set? Can you confirm or deny anything I've 'stated'? Care to comment?
May the Force be with You!

WTF??? How dumb is this?!?! I didn't even know about these changes, Mel... thanks for pointing them out! I very much enjoyed the older versions.... once again, the old is better than the new! why fix something that was working so well to begin with?!
I'll stick to my SW trilogy on VHS, where things are as they should be, without the unnecessary changes. It's a classic! why "futurize" it?

This is quite interesting. I watched a biography of George Lucas just two weeks ago and the only thing I was aware of was the script line of "Obi-wan killed your father". While we don't have the dvd trilogy, I can't deny or confirm anything you mentioned but I do find it very interesting. I know that Lucas likes to change different things about all his SW movies because of his vision and the lack of technology to portray his images way back when. It certainly must have been frustrating to have something in your mind and not be able to get it up on the screen the way he saw it.
Although, I'm not sure what his reasoning is with this and can certainly see your point:

Maybe in his mind, now that all the films have been made he just feels it makes sense to have those little changes made. With Lucas, I think it's all about his "vision".

I agree with you, Erin, I really do. I am watching A New Hope right now and I'm loving it! I really like how he has upgraded the movies to be closer to the way he envisioned them. I watched this documentary about the making of the first three films on the bonus disk and it is so amazing that the movies turned out even half as well as they did. Especially if you consider the fact that there weren't high standards of special effects back then...Lucas created them. Even now, his 'companies' are what allow other big effects movies to be made in the first place.
Lucas bugs me, though, and I'm overly critical of what he does or doesn't do, but that is not because I don't have a high regard and an awful lot of respect for the man and his accomplishments. I will continue to buy every edition of the Star Wars saga, as it's released. :D

I know what you mean. I bet some of the critical-ness (lol) comes from the whole idea that you grew up watching and loving the movies as they were first released. Why change something you already love, right?? :)

For some reason, I never really saw any of the original Star Wars except the first one, until recently... and I knew about the famous line... and then I tried watching for it... and I was confused because I never saw it!
I don't mind enhancements to the movies or adding in additional footage/scenes... but to change something like that... seems wrong!!

*update* Jon and I finally found time to sit down and watch Empire last week and we waited for the line change (Vader's most famous line) and it wasn't there. Vader still says, " I am your father " and Luke still screams, " No " . We played it with every audio track, including commentary and that change was not on our dvd. I don't know why people were saying that was one of the five major changes to the movies?! I know I read that in two different articles, but it doesn't seem to be true. I'm glad because that was the change that actually bothered me. All the rest I really like. :D And replacing the old Anakin with the young-man Anakin has really grown on me. *sigh* I'm so glad that Hayden turned out so cute! :hemanwink

How weird that they've been saying that was one of the changes and then it turns out not to be. lol Well, you should really like the set then if that was your major upset with it. :D
I have to agree with you...Hayden is very cute :hemanwink

I have a C3PO in package still... one is in a bag, and the other is on a card, which one do you want? Oh, one more in a bag... I want to say it's an ewok, but I'm not sure! I'll have to look at it again... sorry! either way, I'll mail them out to you.
wonderberry - November 10, 2004 03:12 PM (GMT)
I called Sean, and it's an ewok. :D
berry elvish - November 10, 2004 03:34 PM (GMT)
NEATO! I love ewoks...shhhh, don't tell any boys! And I've never seen a pez dispenser on a card before! That sounds awesome. I'm getting really excited. :D Thanks, buddy.
Oh, hey, Jon didn't buy me any of the Galactic Heros (playskool sw)...he bought them for himself! And he didn't want to turn on his computer, so I bought the vader...I even used my own pay pal $, but they are hidden away in his room somwhere...he sounds evil, eh? Maybe he's given in to the dark side!
