Title: Ot: Clothes Dying Questions.*update*
berry elvish - April 4, 2005 04:47 PM (GMT)
I have some black pants and a couple of black shirts that have that faded out look and was wondering if anyone here dyes their blacks to keep them looking good? A couple of my black shirts have images on them and I don't want the images to be dyed, just the shirt. Is this possible? Do you use Rit dye? In the washing machine or a pot on the stove?
TIA!
**Updated: ** I bought the liquid concentrated Rit dye in black and dyed a cotton/polyester blend t-shirt that had a white latex(?) image on the front and the shirt dyed great without damaging or dying the image. So, I then dyed several pairs of pants, all of my older Star Wars shirts and my daughter's Yoda shirt and all turned out fantastic without any damage to the images!! I dyed them all with the same bottle of black dye too. I did it outside in the yard in a five gallon bucket, rinsed the clothes with the hose and then took them in and ran them through the washing machine with detergent. :D Cool.

Wow. I'm not sure what I'd do about the images on the shirts but if they were just all plain black I would probably use some sort of clothing dye...either RIT or others and use a pot or some other sturdy container that could withstand heat (and I didn't care about) and dye that way. I know when I dye small pieces of fabric and things I just use a container and either RIT or Dylon dyes. I am not sure about images and things though. Hopefully someone knows what you can do...sorry I wasn't much help...lol :wave

I know this won't be much help... but my friend has a black shirt... and he said to keep from fading it... he *doesn't* wash it. Ewwww!!! :eww

lol!
And they now make all these different detergent for dark clothes now too. Has anyone tried this stuff? I wonder if it works well. I'd love my black clothes to stay dark! lol I sound like a commercial now don't I?

Yeah, well, not washing my clothes is NOT an option! Hee hee hee. I really ought to get some of that non-fading your clothes detergent...I just bought 9 new Star Wars shirts and I don't want them to fade. (I know, I know, 9 is a lot, but I had to buy two each for 4 people and an extra one for me...and I'm not done yet, that was only the first wave!). I may give the Rit dye a try in an old bucket. I think I have an older, raggier t-shirt with an image, or at least bits of an image, somewhere around that can be the test subject. :D

Maybe the RIT company has a website or a customer service phone #. They could hopefully give you some help. I usually only dye ponies and the dye stays on them, so I'm thinking it would stick to any images on a shirt as well. un less you could somehow waterproof just the image...good luck!

Let us know how it turns out if you do decide to try it out on an old shirt. I'd like to hear how it goes. :D
