Title: "New" 80s Toys?
Description: How do YOU feel about them?

Berryblue - September 10, 2004 04:59 PM (GMT)
We are talking about the new versions of 80s toys like Care Bears, Transformers, My Little Pony, GI Joe, Strawberry Shortcake, Masters of the Universe, etc...

berry elvish - September 10, 2004 05:25 PM (GMT)
when I vote I get an error report. :(

I chose I like them, but prefer the 80's versions . For example, I loved Transformers as a kid, my brother's of course. They were easy to transform, once you got the 'moves' down. Like you knew that twist, turn left, turn right, pull up, and twist here would make the gun or whatever. When I first bought my son a New Transformer...Optimus Prime, I believe...it just fell apart at the joints when we tried to transform it. It was unreal! Of course, the newer transformers have different levels of difficulty and we started with a level 4, I think.

Berryblue - September 10, 2004 05:30 PM (GMT)
WTF! I don't understand that at all! I go to edit it and it all looks fine but if you try to actually vote you get a stupid error. I wonder what is up with that... grrrr....

I also choose I like them, but prefer the 80's versions

Yet ANOTHER thing to look into...
I am thinking that maybe it is because I am new at all this. I dunno.

berry elvish - September 10, 2004 07:42 PM (GMT)
It lets me choose all of them! Still the error message, but I'm thinking that it is not reading that a choice has been made since that is pretty much what the error says. Hmmm, your first poll worked just fine!

Berryblue - September 10, 2004 07:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that is why I am baffled. Maybe it is just a glitch in that particular post. Anyway, it is weird.

wonderberry - September 13, 2004 11:58 AM (GMT)
I do like them, but prefer the 80's versions also. Toys were just so much better back then, in both idea and quality. I like the ones that look exactly the same, such as Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, and Cabbage Patch Kids... I don't like the ones that are now different though, like Strawberry Shortcake. :(

Berryblue - September 13, 2004 03:32 PM (GMT)
Oh I agree! I would've been SO upset if they changed around Rainbow Brite!
And about the NEW Strawberry Shortcake dolls, I have found that I love the Strawberryland Fillies even more than the actual dolls right now! LOL!

berry elvish - September 13, 2004 04:44 PM (GMT)
Since the new RBB dolls have come out I have wanted to start a small collection. But, I didn't have any as a child and only caught the cartoon a couple of times, so I don't even know their story. But, as is the way of marketing to young children, I remember wanting a RBB so badly and being really disappointed when I didn't get one.

Berryblue - September 13, 2004 07:32 PM (GMT)
Oh my goodness!! Rainbow Brite and the color kids along with their sprites live in Rainbowland and their job is to keep all the world full of color. Murky Dismal and his fluffball sidekick doofus, Lurky, hate color and try to rid the world of color. So, it is an endless battle between the two groups. lol That is the basic story.

More in depth, the sprites have this stardust stuff that they keep in a little bag around their waists and they sprinkle it all over to add colors. The sprites mine the stardust ( I believe ). And Murky and Lurky try to steal it from RBB the color kids and their sprites.

I remember wanting Indigo SO bad for Christmas one year. I DID get her and I know I still have her at my mom's somewhere (she will be going with me when find her, lol). She was the *only* RBB character that I ever got though. My little sister and brother got a lot more! I know they had RBB herself, Canary Yellow, Buddy Blue, Murky, Lurky, and plush Starlite (her horse).

Right now, I have a complete vintage Patty O'Green, RBB (missing her dress only), Starlite (plush), and a handful of larger sized Sprites (including OJ, Romeo, Champ, and Twink). I have a new version of Patty O'Green and the new small version of RBB with a plastic Starlite.

Rainbow Brite characters are SO cute and I hope they produce more new stuff (maybe with Indigo on them!) :D

berry elvish - September 14, 2004 04:22 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the history lesson, Erin. I'm glad that now I know what it's all about. I saw the larger sized dolls at WM tonight and thought how I would love to get those for Taigan before they stop making them. That is how it always is...I fear they will stop making anything I like! Oh, I meant to tell you this earlier, but I won this pattern for :elf bedroom stuff. Like a wall hanging, a shoe organizer, a flower pillow and a laundry bag. Right now, as you well know, Taigan has the CB theme going in her room, but eventually as she gets older, I plan to gravitate towards elves and faeries. :D

**eidt to say: SQUEAL! I'm a MONCHICHI!**

Berryblue - September 14, 2004 03:58 PM (GMT)
LOL!! That is awesome! How did you win the bedroom stuff! It sounds so cool!

Oh and I totally know what you mean about fearing they'll stop making something. I have been patiently waiting for WM to drop the prices on those RBB dolls (larger ones with the Sprites that light up). They've been at $17 Cdn and I am not paying that much for the rest of the characters. I already bought Patty O'Green a while back because I HAD to have one of them! LOL So, it's a ritual to check the RBB dolls in the toy section to see if they have lowered and now that they moved them so they are on the shelf just above the new Strawberry Shortcake stuff (gotta check for the new fillie, Blueberry Sundae anyway), they've made my job easier. lol

berry elvish - September 14, 2004 10:26 PM (GMT)
Oh, I meant I won an auction, LOL! the auction is still listed, check it out!

WM will never lower their prices on anything good. I do not believe they know the definition of clearance either! We stalk the clearance isles weekly and rarely do I even see anything half price...it's usually only a couple of bucks off.

I put my mini friends plushies back yesterday, I can't justify the purchase cuz I don't have to have them and they are like $5.88 usd each! Now, if I see marmalade I will most definitely buy her.

Since Topic Has Veered Off Course (lol), Topic Has Been Split and Moved Here: Winx Club thread in Toyland General Chat

1u11aby1ambie - September 19, 2004 06:32 AM (GMT)
Hmmm... this is a toughie! I think my answer is I like them, but prefer the 80's version. Except maybe I like the new SSC dolls as much as the old... well, at least, I like vanilla icing more!

Berryblue - September 20, 2004 03:16 PM (GMT)
LOL! Joyce!
And that little plush Vanilla Icing is the *cutest* ever!! :D

wonderberry - September 21, 2004 02:14 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the story on Rainbow Brite Erin! I didn't know the story either! Now you just made me want to collect her also!!!!
Hey Melanie.. wasn't Patty O'Green a Strawberry Shortcake doll? LOL :P

berry elvish - September 21, 2004 04:54 PM (GMT)
 @ Cindie!! I think of that every time I see Patty O Green.

Here's a quick recap of the story so it doesn't remain an inside joke:
After I had been collecting SS for awhile, I met this 18 year old girl...I can't even remember her name atm! She was related to my son's best friend and was over at my house. She saw my SS collection and said that she had a shirt with Patty O Green on it and I said that I'd never heard of Pattty O Green. Anyway, this 18 year old girl who didn't even know who Strawberry Shortcake really was argued with me that Patty O Green is one of SS's best friends! I told her there is no way...first of all Patty O Green, only I called her Patio Green, LOL, doesn't even have a desert name! Anyway this girl was all like "im only 18 and I know more about your SS collection than you do!' and laughing at me. It made me a little bit upset, but I swore there was no such character in Strawberryland. She left thinking she had one-upped me. I then went to TS and asked who the heck was Patio Green and then was told. I never saw that 18 year old again though.

And now that I know who Patty O Green is, I think she is just the cutest thing! :D

Berryblue - September 21, 2004 07:09 PM (GMT)
OMG LOL!!! That is soooooo funny!! It sounds like that little bratty girl had no clue who Strawberry Shortcake was!! LOL!! I would've been so annoyed with her acting like she knew more about my dolls that I do! It's funny though to think about Patty O Green being SSC's best friend. LOL!! Ohhhh boyyy... heeheehee

RollChan1985 - January 16, 2005 01:44 AM (GMT)
I perfer the old skool 80s stuff, specially with My Little Pony and Transformers.
Because Hasbro and Takara had way better ideas back in the 80s and early 90s.

My Little Pony had different varients then (So-Soft,Seahorses,Baby etc) also with Fairytail birds and other toyline like Keypers,My Pretty Mermaid etc.

Transformers was a classic giant robot toy line (the best) Takara/Hasbro placed out.The older mechs were made in better quality not cheaply made.

Hasbro/Takara is sooo running out of ideas. The new ponies are smaller and
made out of cheap rubber as Transformers are being taken over by this lame Pokemon clone Beyblade.....I mean,cmon.......how many Pokemon clones have we had?.Look at poor Megaman/Rockman too,got remade into a Pokemon clone for the new generation of Megaman fans.No wonder our society is a mess today.

I'm a true 80s child and the 80s will live on. :P

:gnight

1u11aby1ambie - January 16, 2005 04:46 PM (GMT)
I guess earlier I voted that I like the new ones, but prefer the 80's toys... but I just "really" voted and ending up picking that I liked them both the same! I figured it averaged out because I still like the old SSC dolls more, but I really like these new Cabbage Patch Kids, and I like Vanilla Icing more of course!! But, I like the 80's MLP better.

Berryblue - January 17, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)
LOL!! It really does even out for you Joyce!
These new CPK are just the cutest. I know I am going to fall over when I see the newest ones out there.

Oh and this fall I saw some anniversary edition Transformers and couldn't believe my eyes. They were made out of metal and were a foot or so tall..not to mention, quite pricey.

berry elvish - January 17, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
I copied Joyce and re-voted. I chose I like them and think it's cool to see all of the 80's toys brought back. I really love the new cpk...and much better than the original, and I do love the new mlp. I only had the 'collector's pose' mlp from the 80's so these new ones are new and fresh for me. I love the baby ones especially. I love the care bears, most specifically the smaller beanie butt ones. And I do love how available everything seems to be. I love the new SS dolls...to a point, but will always prefer the original. The Transformers I still feel the same about, too complicated to transform. I did end up with a small set of RBB dolls. They are Taigan's really, but I have Patty O Green sitting on my desk. And always with the Star Wars toys, I love the variation of the new stuff. The older ones were more playable, but that doesn't matter to me as a collector.

Erin, I saw a collector's edition OP at Walmart, he cost about $65, we did not get him! But they have smaller reproductions at TRU, only they cost about thirty bucks and I doubt they'll ever go on sale.

Berryblue - January 17, 2005 05:12 PM (GMT)
Oh wow. They have smaller ones too? OP at WM was exactly what I was referring to! He was $80 cdn so definitely out of the question! LOL

:woodpink

:wave

I chose like them but prefer the old. I just think the older ones are cuter. Everytime I find an original ssc doll I get excited.I don't get like that with the new ones. My husbands the same ,he freaks when he sees an original joe. I see the new dolls all the time but don't rush to buy them, but with the older ones I spend hours online looking for them.I guess the older ones mean more because they where the ones I had as a kid. :D

:meadow :woodpink

1u11aby1ambie - January 18, 2005 07:22 PM (GMT)
Oh wow! there's a collector's OP? I think my brother would love that! Or one of the smaller versions. I know he'd want it, but there's no way he'd want me to spend $$$ on it.

I like most of the 80's versions of toys best... but there really is something about being able to shop for the new ones in the store. I never really find any vintage toys, except for on ebay.

:heman <== sorry but heman kind of looks like a CPK to me now! I swear I'm tempted to use him to represent my CPK obssesion!! The new CPKs are just so much cuter to me than the old ones. I think maybe because they have Asian ones. I know they made some Asian ones in later series, but they aren't as cute. My only "gripe" is that I think the Asians should have a slightly smaller nose... but I guess they aren't going to make a whole set of headmolds just for the Asian CPKs.

OMG! LOL LOL!!! I am going to make at least ONE CPK emoticon just for you, Joyce!  That is too funny!!!!

I like them--but prefer the 80's

I'm amazed at how CB & RBB look sooo close to the originals -that was refreshing to see

I agree Shell. I get ESPECIALLY excited around the new Rainbow Brite stuff and my little sister is the one who loves them even MORE! lol Although, I still to this day adore Indigo and Hammy  I am pretty sure I still have them at my mom's place too!

Shellberry Shortcake - January 24, 2005 10:51 PM (GMT)
I tried to get my niece into them--nah didn't work, lol
I think she would be more into them if there were playsets and smaller dolls out..

awww! I still have all my childhood ones too--some things I will just NEVER part with

Berryblue - January 24, 2005 11:12 PM (GMT)
I only wish they'd remake an Indigo and Hammy. Oh that would be sooooo cute!!! ^_^

Shellberry Shortcake - January 25, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
aww-Erin they would be cute if remade!!!

I hope that they aren't stoppin all RBB production--it seems that everywhere I went-the new dolls were on clearance...and nothing new was being introduced...

-_-

Berryblue - January 25, 2005 05:39 PM (GMT)
That is sad news.
Since the new WM here opened today they had the RBB dolls on clearance (finally). No one would buy them here because they were $16-17 (cdn) each. That's a lot to spend on a doll all at once.

I did end up buying a Patty O'Green though. I HAD to get at least one of them!

I bet if they'd lower their price, more people would buy. Guaranteed that more people would've here. Oh and they had the dolls in a REALLY bad location on the shelf for most of the time that they had them. That didn't help matters either. :(

berry elvish - January 25, 2005 07:47 PM (GMT)
I would have loved to get one of the bigger Patty O Greens! I just have the 6 inch or whatever...and I think Taigan came and snagged her back anyway.

But it was the same way with the RBB...not that many people bought them here either.

1u11aby1ambie - January 25, 2005 08:08 PM (GMT)
Maybe it'd help if they put some of the RBB cartoons back on tv?? I saw the Patty O Green/sprite 6" doll on clearance at Toys R Us too. I think most kids get into the characters by watching them on tv.

Shellberry Shortcake - January 25, 2005 09:25 PM (GMT)
I have the smaller pattio (;) )
I got her on clearance at a hot topic AGES ago....

hmm..I think I'm going to pull my RBB's out and display them and my mlp's on my barbie townhouse shelves....that would give me a ton of room + an extra tote for decotations....

hmmm.......

1u11aby1ambie - January 25, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
Oh!!!! You'll have to show us pics of how you've displayed them!!! :hkhappy

Berryblue - January 26, 2005 05:31 PM (GMT)
That's a really good point, Joyce. They really should put the cartoons back on the air. I know I'd watch them! LOL

And yes, Shell, show us your pics when you set everything up :wave

Shellberry Shortcake - January 29, 2005 01:50 AM (GMT)
oh oh-I posted a pic or two somewhere around here.... :wave

80's Freak - February 3, 2005 03:24 AM (GMT)
I hate the fact that they make new toys of the old shows they ruin the show all together it's a shame.

weredog - May 11, 2005 05:08 PM (GMT)
I actually prefer the new Care Bears, because I can finally own a plush Loyal Heart Dog.Always wanted one as a kid but they didn't release them over here back then.
The 80's Pound Puppies are the best, followed by the 90's ones. The 00's onse are all right but they pack them full of electronics now which seems a bit unneccessary to me.What's wrong with a good old fashioned plush dog? Why does every plush nowadays have to make noise?
