Title: Selling Stuff...ethics, Etc.

berry elvish - January 27, 2005 10:08 PM (GMT)
Okay, so I got this BOMB deal on a BHH. The seller nearly completely disassembled the whole thing prior to shipping. I really only needed some of the furniture and a few key parts like the swing and attic ladder to complete my BHH. My goal is to make back the $35 that I spent on the auction. I don't care about making the shipping $ back, just that $35. Now, I have posted on another board bragging about my great deal. So, is it ethical to sell it off in pieces trying to make my money back? Or to sell the whole shabang for more than I paid for it? I want to offer it to board members first because there are always just those little things that they need to complete their collections, you know? But, I really don't want to make anyone mad at me...so should I list everything on eBay? I hate selling on eBay because my stuff never sells and it always costs me money in the end. Am I just being a :ahoy

lol, I'm going to show you that that little pirate icon has tons of uses!

I think it's fine to sell off the BHH in pieces or as a whole for more when it's still a fair price. You still paid for shipping and that would've been a lot, and I'd still consider that part of the cost of the house really.

well--I would include the price of shipping as a factor into your cost.

If you don't actually need the house--I would offer that on a board..I know there are people looking for them-but they get too high on ebay--even one with broken parts is better than none at all..ya know?

Pass Cindie and I your extras and do what you want with the rest... LOL-no just kidding... :evil

Or maybe just post a sale list with 'extras' -not even mentioning items from the house ?

Hi. It's not unethical to resell stuff and make a profit. No one needs to know what you paid. Lets say you got an excellent deal on a box of ssc dolls at a yard sale, $5.00 for everything including a plum puddin'. Someone else would think that paying like $75 was a good deal for that (if you sold it). That makes you lucky, not unethical. People won't pay more than they want to. If they think it's a fair price they will buy it.
And the cost of the shipping is an expense to you. You shouldn't have to suffer a loss. Good luck :carebear

I totally agree with purplestar on this one.

She said it perfectly. I have nothing else to add. The demand is there for the items and let them pay what they are "worth" to them.
It's really not anyone's business what you pay for your things in the end and people shouldn't be calculating along to get the same "good" deal that you may have gotten. It's a different story if it's your friend and you don't mind selling for what you paid...but I wouldn't outright offer the same exact price if I really need the money (which is the case, many times... I can sympathize with that!)

I think this is a good idea. It shouldn't have anything to do with YOUR particular transaction and has to do with your extras. I say, sell your extras for a fair price and don't feel obligated to cut deals for everyone. Money is tight...especially after the holidays. :)

oh--I mean don't mention that some of the particular items for sale are from the bomb diggity house lot, lol
I posted it wrong up there and it sound funny... :wave

Yeah, I'm just always leery of selling stuff. The list of "extras" include all the BHH parts and pieces, LOL In fact, it's nearly the entire lot of stuff, minus the furniture and rare pieces, like the swing, attic stairs and mailbox.

Okay, you guys, I see your point. I am not trying to junk anyone out and I'm not out to make a profit...getting my money back would be just fine with me. I wasn't concerned about the shipping because the stuff I did keep was worth twenty bucks to me. Oh, btw...shipping was only $20 via Fedex Ground and I think that anyone (USA) who pays more than that for their bhh didn't look into all of their options. I always ask sellers if they would consider sending said item via Fedex before I even consider placing my bid. I got my Playskool Victorian Dollhouse shipped to me for $11 via fedex! :afro

Wish I hadn't missed the penny listing days on eBay.

purplestar - January 28, 2005 04:26 AM (GMT)
Well I hope you feel better now!
I am not in the market for a bhh, but whenever I see them on ebay they are selling for a great price, even missing pieces, decals, etc. And when I really really want something the shipping almost doesn't matter (and believe me it costs a lot to ship to Canada for a box of ponies!). And how about some pics of your complete BHH??? I'd love to see it all set up.

Berryblue - January 28, 2005 04:39 PM (GMT)
Yeah Melanie! We need to see it once you get everything all set up :love

I just paid $40 for shipping for a bhh that I won on ebay. You got a great deal on shipping.I'll have to remember to ask people about fedex.I agree with everyone on resaling the house for parts.you can make your money back easily.I've spent the last month looking on ebay for a bhh and seen alot of people selling just parts.Like selling the mailbox separate, windows, stairs,it just depends on what parts people need to finish theirs. They will be willing to pay the price. :sw4

berry elvish - January 29, 2005 05:53 PM (GMT)
I forgot to mention that the seller charged me twenty dollars for packing materials...she probably did spend that much on them, but she sure didn't use that much on my bhh! Oh, well, she stated in her auction that shipping would also include her $20 material fee...so I paid $40 for shipping too.

yeah, I was thinking about offering the whole thing up first...structurally it is still complete, I only needed minor things off of it. And if no one wants it, I'll sell it piece by piece. Thanks for all of the support guys, it really did make me feel better. :)
